Job Description

Medical Laboratory Technologist

You will be part of the clinical microbiology lab in SGH which plays a key role in the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases.

You will perform laboratory tests, assist in preparing various types of media, receive and process specimens, including carrying out specialised investigations of patient samples. You will perform ongoing quality control checks to ensure test results are precise and accurate.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a section focusing on bacterial genomics and contribute to understanding disease processes, infection prevention and control, and public health.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff; assist in establishing, implementing and updating departmental policies and procedures.
  • Able to work rotating shifts.
Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant discipline (biomedical science, bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or related field)
  • Masters in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Degree in Biomedical Science, Biological Science, Medical Technology or equivalent with minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Good command of English; strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in scripting and statistical languages (e.g., Perl, Python, R), particularly with packages such as Biopython
  • Prior experience in wet lab and bioinformatics analysis of human/microbial genomes; metagenomics experience is an advantage
  • Knowledge of high performance computing (HPC) and cloud computing
