Experience

10-12 years experience in design and detailing of civil and structural works in substations (Grid, Pooling), power plant projects, construction industry, oil and gas, fertilizer industry, refineries, and thermal power plants. The role covers design of precast, RCC cast in-situ, and steel buildings, as well as electrical equipment support structures and foundations. Must be well‑versed in American standards with exposure to UAE standards a must.

Objective

The person shall be responsible for the complete design and detailed engineering for substations. The Design Lead shall manage and review the entire design documents and drawings for a project or a set of smaller projects, coordinating with other disciplines such as electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical. The Design Lead shall coordinate with design consultants, manage the engineering activities within budget, deliver on time, and maintain a high quality of engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Review of detailed drawings for precast/steel or RCC cast in-situ buildings and foundations for all buildings and equipment.
• Review of structural design and its foundation, equipment foundation design for substation projects.
• Analysis, design and detailing of substation structures and their components.
• Design and detailing of substation equipment foundations.
• Submission of design documents and drawings to client for approval.
• Maintaining Document Control Index (DCI) for document tracking.
• Coordination with site team and client to meet the requirements of design and drawings.
• Checking BOQ and material with respect to previous projects.
• Preparation of DBR scope of work for project engineering.
• Interaction with client for drawing approval and clarification.
• Interaction with site for drawing clarification.
• Interaction with SCM for drawing clarification.

Technical Expertise

Design Lead shall be capable of executing the engineering activities for civil & structural substation works & related interlinking works with the grid. The Design Lead shall be able to review vendor engineering documents with respect to civil & structural design.

The Design Lead is required to be well-versed in analysis and design and engineering coordination for:

• RCC (precast & cast in-situ) & steel structure buildings.
• Outdoor gantry & equipment structures.
• Transformer/reactor foundations & soak pits.
• Site grading for substation works.
• Other outdoor services such as drainage, roads, cable trenches, etc. for substation.

The Design Lead should also have detailed knowledge of substation equipment and their layouts.

Furthermore, the Design Lead should have the basic and detailed understanding of civil & structural drawings, GA drawings of equipment & gantry towers, foundation for transformers & other electrical equipment in substation & transmission lines.

Operating Network

• Internal: Engineering Heads, Cluster Heads, SCM, QC, other PEMs, proposal team, safety (sometimes), other section heads, design engineers, draftsman.
• External: Clients (decision-making authority) / consultants, vendors.

Key Performance Indicators

• On-time delivery, quality control, quantity with respect to ACE (accepted cost estimate), internal process, development of subordinates, customer relations, innovation (new idea implementation), savings from the project.

Codes, Software Skills Required

• American codes, Middle East local codes and standards.
• STAADPro, ETABS, precast design software and exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, Google Earth.
