The Role of the Director of Learning & Development

Delivers workplace learning, service improvement programs, and initiatives to best achieve long-term business success; add value in meeting the hotel’s needs by identifying and implementing learning and performance improvement strategies that support the hotel’s strategic direction; promotes a continuous learning culture; partners with stakeholders to ensure employees are trained on the needed skills to successfully perform their jobs to attain service excellence.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a Learning & Development in a managerial capacity.
  • Experience in adult education or a similar environment.
  • Experience in hotel operations, preferably luxury hospitality or other service environments.
  • Experience managing in diverse cultures.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Instructional design skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills (i.e., ability to identify when training is the actual solution and provide it if required).
  • Coaching skills.

  • Adult learning styles and principles.
  • Needs Assessment methodologies and learning needs identification.
  • Learning technologies, such as e‑learning options and distance learning.
  • Theories and types of evaluation for measuring program financial impact, such as Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels.
  • Project planning tools and processes.
  • Communication and influencing strategies.
  • Basic budgeting, accounting, and financial management.
  • Current on industry trends affecting workplace learning.
  • Is a skilled Learning Professional with experience in successfully managing all aspects of the learning function including needs analysis, learning planning, training delivery, training design, business partnership and impact measurement.
  • Is a good “judge” of people, quickly understands the environment and coaches others to improve long‑term outcomes.
  • Can successfully develop someone without direct reporting line.
  • Able to influence and ‘push back’ with challenging and varied senior stakeholders including property Planning Committee and RVP.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to identify pattern in data to make recommendations in an environment with competing demands.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably in a second language that will provide further support based on multiple properties.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with lean resources while delivering high quality results.
  • Proactive, hands on and able to operate autonomously.
