Dialysis Nurse Job Description

The practice of dialysis nursing encompasses patient care, education and training, and administration. As a dialysis nurse you may be responsible for:

  • Assessing patients for impending complications; ensuring that the dialysis area is clean before beginning procedures.
  • Monitoring each patients vitals and response to treatment and evaluating the effectiveness of dialysis equipment.
  • Administering medication and providing support and encouragement to patients who are apprehensive.
  • Conveying patient-specific information to the nephrologist, dialysis technicians, and other health care providers.
  • Informing patients about their condition, treatment schedule, dietary restrictions, and any other relevant information that would affect the outcome of their care.
  • Overseeing all activities related to equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and sterilization.
  • Assisting in administrative functions related to maintaining accurate records on patient profiles, treatments given, equipment used, and supplies needed.
  • Monitoring progress towards established goals for patients on chronic dialysis and modifying treatment regimens to meet patient needs.
  • Post-dialysis care, which may include educating patients and their families about how to manage and perform dialysis at home, including medications, proper nutrition, lifestyle changes, and monitoring compliance with the treatment plan.
