Research Associate - Chemistry (Postdoctoral Research Associate Level A)

Location: Sydney, Australia.

Job Summary: The School of Chemistry at UNSW invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the Smart Materials and Surfaces research group. The position supports a 12‑month ARC Discovery grant focused on nanoconfinement in electrochemistry, where the candidate will develop and evaluate novel electrode materials.

About The Role
  • $113K – $121K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed term – 12 months
  • Full‑time (35 hours per week)
  • Reports to Professor Justin Gooding; no direct reports.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in electrochemistry and electrocatalysis.
  • Perform and supervise experiments to evaluate catalytic materials electrochemically.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks detailing all experiments.
  • Complete experiments and provide timely analysis of results.
  • Analyse and write results for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to scientific papers, reports, and progress reporting to colleagues and industry partners.
  • Assist in preparing research proposals to funding bodies and seek industry collaboration.
  • Coordinate research activities and contribute to outputs to meet project milestones.
  • Present results at national and international conferences.
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct, values, and university health & safety policies.
About The Successful Applicant

Selection Criteria: Candidates should demonstrate:

  • PhD specialising in electrochemistry.
  • Ability to develop electrochemical procedures for material characterisation.
  • Extensive experience in electrochemical measurements.
  • Experience in materials synthesis.
  • Previous research experience and training of PhD and Honours students.
  • Teamwork, collaboration across disciplines, and relationship building.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication and interaction with diverse stakeholders and students.
  • Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, and relevant policies.
  • Knowledge of health and safety duties and willingness to attend training.
