University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine for a 12 month period. In the Department there is a commitment to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, and excellence in education/training. Services will be provided within our newly redeveloped emergency floor with access to state of the art in situ diagnostics with rapid access to emergency ambulatory care and specialist support. Provision of high‑quality urgent care is a strategic priority for UCLH and successful candidates will join us as we embark on our ambitious plans to transform emergency care services for our local population. We seek to embed service improvement, education and innovation in all aspects of our work.

We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic doctors who wish to provide high quality clinical care as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team. The Department sees about 156,000 patients a year, including a significant proportion of ambulatory patients with minor illness and injury.

The posts are offered on a sessional basis with up to 10 sessions per week, but it is anticipated that some applicants will wish to work part‑time, subject to a minimum number of sessions per month. Start date will be by mutual agreement with the successful applicants. The role will be covered by trust indemnity, and candidates will be eligible to enlist on the NHS pension scheme.

• Eligible for full UK GMC Registration
• FCEM (or equivalent)
• On GMC Specialist List in Emergency Medicine, or at the time of interview within 6 months of anticipated date of CCT in Emergency Medicine NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register and Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine at the date of interview
• Provider status in ALS, ATLS (or equivalent) and in APLS (or equivalent).
• Instructor status in one or more life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, PALS)

• Demonstrable experience in Emergency Medicine at a level equivalent to senior trainee or Consultant, leading a multidisciplinary team effectively
• Ability and willingness to take full responsibility for clinical care of patients of any acuity in the Emergency Department Knowledge of and engagement with standards and performance targets relevant to Emergency Medicine practice
• Demonstrable understanding of Clinical Governance in the ED Up‑to‑date on national guidelines relevant to Emergency Medicine.

• Ability to perform clinical procedures essential to Emergency Medicine practice
• Ability to triage / stream patients effectively and manage patient flows within the Emergency Department
• Ability to advise on the efficient and smooth running of an Emergency Medicine service
• Ability to manage patients on a Clinical Decision Unit, and in particular patients with minor head injury Basic trauma ultrasound skills.
• Ability to teach ultrasound skills

• Knowledge of and involvement in Clinical Governance issues Experience of having led audit projects in an Emergency Department Proficiency with IT systems relevant to Emergency Department practice Good keyboard skills.

• High level of commitment to teaching with a track record of teaching at all levels.
• Peer reviewed publications Familiarity with research methodology

• Accountability: ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions, and exert appropriate authority
• Communication: ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade & negotiate
• Interpersonal Skills: ability to see patients as people, empathise, work cooperatively with others, and resolve conflict satisfactorily
• Leadership skills: awareness of importance of role of every Consultant as clinical leader in the Emergency Department and ability to provide clinical leadership during a shift on the 'shop floor' of the Emergency Department; demonstrable problem solving skills.
