We own and maintain the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales. Every time a phone is plugged in, or a switch is turned on, we’ve played a part, connecting you to the electricity you need.

As a Senior Land Officer / Land Officer, you'll support the delivery of technical land rights support for existing National Grid assets and provide expert advice to land teams in the delivery of our land rights strategy in accordance with current best practice, process and guidance.

Our Access to Land team play a pivotal role in delivering The Great Grid Upgrade. Our teams are dedicated to securing land access rights, negotiating with landowners, and navigating complex capital projects, without which it wouldn't be possible to build and maintain our future Grid. It's no small feat - and we need the best to join us in our mission.

This role welcomes applicants UK wide, and we offer hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to weekly travel throughout England and Wales as required. You'll also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.

Key accountabilities
  • Support/manage the acquisition of land rights/legal agreements as required for operational purposes to ensure maintenance and capital projects are achieved to time and cost.
  • Support outage and non-outage Electricity Transmission activities for maintenance and capital projects.
  • Negotiate and agree access with landowners, their occupiers, appointed agents and third parties (or engage contractors to do the same) and be the main point of contact for the project team delivering the work.
  • Ensure that there is a single point of contact for the landowner/occupier throughout the delivery of the works.
  • Engage contractors to manage works and manage these through to completion.
  • Management of contractors to support multiple large scale refurbishment overhead line or underground cable schemes to include negotiation of access with landowners, their occupiers, appointed agents and third parties.
  • Liaise with relevant statutory bodies for access and consents to carry out the works.
  • Ensure that regular reporting, including forecast of costs, is provided to the project team.
  • Provide support to framework consents and ecological contractors to ensure that applications are submitted and licences / assents granted.
  • Oversee and mentor junior colleagues, provide coaching and assistance, as necessary.
About you
  • Experience of dealing with complex capital projects.
  • Proven ability to negotiate with a wide range of external stakeholders from individual members of the public, landowners, commercial establishments, contractors, developers. Managing often conflicting objectives.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of the principles of land use planning and rights over land and the principles of compensation.
  • Experience of acquiring the land rights needed to facilitate the maintenance of National Grid’s electricity transmission network, or equivalent infrastructure.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams including internal and external resource, to deliver land related activities.
  • Experience of analysing data from a variety of sources and using this to support project decisions.
  • Experience of managing external contractors to deliver a high-quality service on time and budget.
  • Preferably degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or working towards AssocRICS or MRICS.
What you'll get
  • A competitive salary between £42,000 - £55,000 - dependent on capability.
  • Job requirement car.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • A comprehensive internal training programme along with support for relevant external courses.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
