Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, innovative and highly motivated individual to join the GMMH Corporate Safeguarding Team as the Trusts Named Nurse for Child Safeguarding. The post will be a Secondment Cover/Fixed Term Contract until the 30th September 2026.

The postholder will lead on the child safeguarding agenda and be responsible for ensuring that the Trust carries out its statutory duties in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

The post holder must hold a current nursing qualification and have demonstrable post registration experience in child safeguarding.

Main duties of the job
  • To share learning from both national and local case reviews, complaints, incidents or near misses related to the safeguarding of children.
  • To provide specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, that is consistent with the requirements of the Children Acts 1989 and 2004 and related guidance and relevant Local Safeguarding Children's Partnerships.
  • To continually raise the profile and staff awareness of child safeguarding issues for staff who work with adults, children and young people affected by mental health and/or substance misuse issues, including Tier 4 CAMHS services.
  • To promote effective practice that enables staff to identify child safeguarding concerns and respond appropriately.
  • To operationally manage and provide leadership to the Deputy Child Safeguarding Lead.
  • FGM Lead for the Trust.
  • To support the Named Nurse/Professional for Adult Safeguarding to ensure compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • To promote and support the Serious Youth Violence agenda across the Trust in conjunction with system partners.

Qualifications/Experience

Flexible working to meet the needs of the service. Interpersonal, negotiation and risk assessments skills.
  • IT skills (ECDL or equivalent), research skills, influencing skills.
Specialist Knowledge
  • Highly specialist knowledge and understanding of working with complex family situations, mental health, substance misuse in relation to safeguarding children, highly specialist knowledge of the recognition and assessment of children at risk of significant harm, understanding of the national agenda for Child Safeguarding/Children in Need, legal literacy – child safeguarding.
  • Specific expertise in children’s health and development, child maltreatment and local arrangements for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, in‑depth knowledge on childcare law, policy and practice.

  • Able to use own initiative, interpret policy, provide advice and act independently. Able to recognise the need for and seek personal support/professional supervision. Able to work effectively as part of a team and to recognise and support the needs of others in a sensitive and effective manner.
