Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join NDT, while being based in Merton. The role offers a valuable opportunity for people with an interest in neurodevelopmental presentations, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders and ADHD. Supervised by senior clinical/counselling psychologists, the post is highly suitable for candidates who aspire to learn more and/or specialise in neurodevelopmental conditions.

The main role within this post will involve support screening and reviewing clinical information related to young people presenting with Neurodevelopmental (ND) difficulties, and making onward referrals for assessments within NDT or signposting to other services as required. As well as including conducting basic risk assessments as required and be part of the duty rota. The role will also involve liaising with young people/families/multi‑agency professionals, arranging school observations, managing risk, and offering clinical assessments if indicated. Excellent organisation and written and verbal communication skills will be required. There will also be the opportunity to supervise Assistant Psychologists and Interns.

Main duties of the job
  • To support the development, organisation and delivery of a Triage and assessment service
  • To contribute to the effective working of the NDT team by creating and maintaining databases to track referrals, assessments, interventions and producing reports from this data.
  • To support in the design and implementation of audit and research projects to inform the Lead Psychologist and others in the development of Trust psychology and other services, training provision and research activities.
  • To receive regular clinical and professional supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines and undertake personal training relevant to the post in agreement with the supervising psychologist and the manager.
  • To respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations and to support others involved in such situations.
  • Be involved in the pre and post diagnostic offer, by supporting groups and workshops delivery.
  • Support screening and reviewing clinical information related to young people presenting with Neurodevelopmental (ND) difficulties, and making onward referrals for assessments within NDT or signposting to other services as required.
  • Be involved in a variety of tasks in the NDT, including liaising with young people/families/multi‑agency professionals, arranging school observations, managing risk, and offering clinical assessments if indicated.
  • Support or supervise other members of the team such as assistant psychologists or interns as appropriate.

Job responsibilities
  • Work primarily within the NDT, to support screening and reviewing clinical information related to young people presenting with Neurodevelopmental (ND) difficulties, and making onward referrals for assessments within NDT or signposting to other services as required.
  • Be involved in a variety of tasks in the NDT, including liaising with young people/families/multi‑agency professionals, arranging school observations, managing risk, and offering clinical assessments if indicated.

  • Work closely with the ND team and liaise with other colleagues in local SPAs and other CAMHS teams if needed.
  • Support or supervise other members of the team such as assistant psychologists or interns as appropriate.
  • Have an agreed job plan with specified activity and throughput levels;
  • Co‑ordinate care for those children, young people and families on their caseload;
  • Manage risk within team, Directorate and Trust structures;
  • Work to relevant professional and ethical guidelines, and within the framework of Directorate and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Use screening and outcome measures in clinically meaningful ways to demonstrate treatment effectiveness and seek feedback about user experience.
  • Be part of the duty rota
Person Specification
TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC as an applied psychologist
  • Post‑graduate doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS and HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Training as part of a CYP IAPT collaborative in a recognised evidence‑based approach
  • ADOS, ADI‑R or 3di Training
  • Training in post‑diagnostic interventions for ASD/ ADHD
  • Other relevant training related to neurodevelopment or child development.

  • Demonstrable experience of working with children and young people in a variety of community settings
  • Experience of multi‑disciplinary team working
  • Experience of inter‑agency working
  • Experience of safeguarding and Child Protection
  • Experience of leading case reviews
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience of teaching and liaising with other professional groups
  • Experience of working with neurodevelopmental disorders
