Job Overview

Are you an experienced Physiotherapist with the passion for working with older people with frailty? Are you keen to develop on your broad clinical skills in an acute settings? Do you want to develop clinical leadership skills and be involved in exciting service development opportunities? If so, then we are looking for you to join our team! We are a large, vibrant and friendly team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and therapy support workers with a shared vision of supporting older people to do what is important to them and to continue participating in their activities of daily living. This exciting post would provide you with the opportunity to rotate as a Band 6, gaining valuable experience, clinical and leadership opportunities in acute. You will be part of the RUH’s progressive and friendly integrated therapies department, where there is a culture of promoting learning and staff and service development.

Main duties of the job

To hold responsibility for own case load and provide a high standard therapy service in rotational posts to:

  • The Frailty Flying Squad (FFS) which is a dynamic team of geriatricians, medical nurse practitioners and occupational therapists and physiotherapists providing early assessment and intervention in the emergency department and Older Person’s Rapid Assessment Area (OPRAA) to those patients living with frailty.
  • The Older Person’s Assessment Unit (OPAU) and Older Person’s Unit Short Stay (OPUSS) which are our short‑stay, older people’s inpatient ward for our patients who require a bed for less than 72 hours.
  • The Older Person’s Unit (OPU) which is the inpatient older people’s wards where patients that are likely to require care for longer than 72 hours.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
  • Must be able to provide evidence (through appraisals, competencies and reflection from post graduate study) to demonstrate development of specialist knowledge particularly in working with older people.
  • Strong understanding of the physiotherapy process and the ability to apply it when working with older people.
  • Experience of student and junior staff supervision.
  • Specialist knowledge of a broad range of conditions which older people may present with.
  • Clear understanding of and experience of working with people with frailty syndromes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the physical, mental and psychosocial needs of older people (using a bio‑psycho‑social model to support clinical reasoning).
  • Strong understanding of, and positive view of risk enablement.
  • Knowledge of validated assessment tools and outcome measures.
  • Experience of working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of working in a community services and intermediate care settings.
  • Experience of working in the emergency department/rapid response service.
  • Experience of being involved in service development activities.
  • Experience in audit or measuring clinical effectiveness.
  • At least 2 years post qualified experience, to include acute experience.

Requirements due to Working Environment
Essential criteria
  • To work alone in environment e.g. domiciliary settings and during the on‑call service, assessing and managing risk.
  • The job may involve frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions on a regular (daily) basis, e.g., bodily fluids including sputum, vomit, urine and occasional exposure to verbal and physical aggression.
  • Ability to be mobile and travel.

  • Valid UK driving licence.
