Senior MRI Radiographer

Are you a passionate MRI Radiographer ready to take the next step in your career? This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding Imaging Department at Milton Keynes University Hospital, where you'll play a key role in shaping and advancing our MRI services within a dynamic and forward-thinking team.

We're seeking an enthusiastic and motivated radiographer with a strong commitment to delivering outstanding patient care and continually developing professional skills. Working as part of our dedicated multidisciplinary team, you'll gain valuable experience across a broad range of MRI examinations, including, neuro, MSK, angiography, and dynamic studies.

Our Imaging Department is equipped with state-of-the‑art technology, featuring:

  • Two Siemens 1.5T MRI scanners on-site
  • One GE 1.5T Voyager MRI scanner at our Community Diagnostic Centre

And with a brand-new Imaging Scanning Centre set to open in Spring 2026, there's never been a more exciting time to join us.

In this 12-month fixed-term role, you'll contribute to providing a high-quality, patient-centred diagnostic MRI service while supporting and mentoring students and junior radiographers. You'll also have access to ongoing CPD opportunities and hands‑on experience to further enhance your expertise.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 Radiographer, you will be expected to work independently in accordance with departmental Standard Operating procedures and be accountable for your own actions to the Section Head of the MRI Department, escalating any concerns to your manager when necessary.

The Imaging department provides a wide range of services for patients within a variety of settings. Services provided range from simple radiography to complex procedures such as arteriography, CT and MRI or interventional procedures such as the introduction of intra‑arterial therapeutic devices, the implantation of indwelling feeding catheters and pain relief devices where the patient may be sedated or anaesthetised. These procedures may be performed as an outpatient appointment or may involve an in‑patient stay and will require the postholder's highly skilled standards of technique.

The MRI service is a patient focused service. Examinations are varied, ranging from Neuro, Pelvic and Abdominal, Musculoskeletal, Breast and Peripherals. The MRI service is provided for a range of patients such as neonates and elderly, inpatients, and outpatients. MRI scan results can be used to help diagnose conditions, plan treatments, and assess how effective previous treatment has been.

Job responsibilities

To provide a high quality responsive diagnostic service whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care. To be responsible for the safe use of Imaging equipment within the MRI department., running quality assurance and fault‑finding checks on equipment and taking action as appropriate. To perform a range of examinations appropriate to the requirements of the referring clinician and the medical needs of the patient as an independent and autonomous practitioner. To provide clear instructions and information to support and reassure patients and carers, ensuring they comply with all safety standards during their time in the MRI department. To participate in extended working hours including weekend, evening and on‑call duties as required by the service To assist in training and supervision of less experienced Radiographers and students within MRI. To work within established departmental policies and procedures. To undertake advanced practices such as MRI angiography, IV contrast injections, complex scans such as cancer staging, liver and bowel imaging and caring for sedated patients. To develop and utilise sound skills and knowledge in all aspects of MRI Imaging. To plan and prioritise own workload and assist in the triaging of workflow and patients within the MRI department by collaborating with colleagues to maximise departmental efficiency. To be able to recognise abnormalities and irregularities in images, which can sometimes be subtle and take appropriate actions. Assist in the development of CPD and undertake self‑development to meet current requirements To assist with clerical tasks and supporting tasks in support of the service. To perform MRI examinations in the best interests of the patient whilst using resources optimally and maintaining a safe environment for patient and public. Following an MRI investigation to ensure that the results are appropriately acted upon and that the patient is aware of the next step in their medical management. To participate in governance activities including departmental audits as required.

Qualifications and knowledge
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration
  • Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, word, outlook, power point and excel)
  • Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
  • Knowledge of a wide range of diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Evidence of keeping informed of the current CT/ MRI imaging techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)
  • Possesses 6‑month post qualification knowledge and experience as a radiographer.
