Power Market Manager

FIELD
London
GBP 58,000 - 72,000
Job description

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

Power Market Manager

Department: Analysis

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: UK - London

Compensation: GBP 58,000 - GBP 72,000 / year

Description

A bit about Field:

To reach Net Zero, we need to solve big problems. Field will fund, build and run the renewable infrastructure we need to tackle these challenges. At Field, we will show that batteries are a totally viable part of our energy infrastructure - now, not in some distant future.

And, we have ambitious plans to become the defining new clean energy player in Europe over the next few years, gradually expanding beyond batteries into new asset types.

The role:

The Power Market Manager is a role sitting within the cross-functional Strategy & Analysis team supporting critical functions for Field across all teams and geographies. In this role, you will drive action and have a major impact on key business decisions - this is not a theoretical consulting type of role.

As we expand our operations in the low-carbon flexibility space, we need to have robust Field forecasts for power prices and BESS revenues. To achieve this our in-house power market model needs to be fed with precise input data, so we can use the results to decide how to execute hedges and tolls on the medium term and trades in the short term on our operational assets, driving real business value. We also need high quality intelligence and analysis of our target markets, as the basis for strategic decision-making, and to support fundraising.

In the Power Market Manager role, you will be responsible for owning the Field view of our power price and revenue forecasts. You will maintain the inputs for our power market model, ensuring that they are fully up to date in a rapidly changing market environment. You will define the cadence with which data inputs need to be updated and execute on this, automating updates as much as possible. You will synthesise information from a wide variety of sources (e.g. GB and European TSOs, third-party technical and market advisors) and work closely with our Treasury and Technology teams to ensure they have the right forecasts they need to execute hedges, tolls and trades.

You will lead and independently execute market analyses and provide strategic recommendations, and present these to the senior management team and Field investors to drive decisions.

The successful candidate will regularly interact with:

  • The Senior Leadership Team
  • The Technology team responsible for our in-house optimisation and trading platform, to determine trades and strategy.
  • The Treasury team to set tolls, hedges and strategy.
  • The Development team to decide project specifications (e.g. power, energy, oversizing, augmentation, etc).

This role is ideal if you are strongly motivated by the challenge of the energy transition and are keen to make a real difference in the renewable energy and zero-carbon flexibility space. You want to take responsibility for owning the Field forecast view and getting this as close to actuals as possible. You need to have a strong understanding of energy markets and their drivers, an eye for detail and curiosity to explore the available data for insights. This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented person who is able to distil insights into actionable messages for other functions to drive decision making.

Below is an overview of the main responsibilities. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list and we expect the role to evolve as we continue to scale up.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Own the input data for our in-house power market model and identify business needs and use-cases for our power price and revenue forecasts:
    1. Research, analyse and synthesise key energy market information (capacity mix, demand, commodities, prices, etc) to maintain the data inputs for our in-house power market model in GB. Build a robust Field view that you can stand up for and defend in front of key stakeholders.
    2. Build and maintain tools for efficient processing of data inputs and ensure they are kept up to date, defining the cadence with which to review each input and executing this.
    3. Understand business needs and use cases for our in-house power market model through interacting with the relevant teams (e.g. Technology team, Treasury, etc.)
    4. Liaise with our model developers to challenge and improve our in-house power market model, and serve as a thought partner for development of new features.
  2. Produce regular power price and revenue forecasts for the business and track performance over time:
    1. Create monthly forecasts for the business, senior leadership team and board on power prices and revenues, and market trends to support the operation of our assets.
    2. Track power price and revenue forecast performance vs actuals over time on defined metrics (e.g. RMSE) and continually improve this over time.
    3. Compare our internal power price and revenue forecasts to external ones and explain the differences, both in terms of the outputs and the drivers.
  3. Monitor key market developments and changes in the drivers of value in merchant markets: Communicate key market updates and conduct analysis on expected impacts of recent market developments on Field's business case.
  4. Produce high-quality electricity market research and analysis and make strategic recommendations for the business: Carry out primary research, including developing models as relevant or running scenarios using our in-house power market model. This could be focused on the GB power market or much broader (e.g. considering the development of a project with a new technology). Present outcomes to senior leadership, investors and/or the board. Examples of past research projects include:
    1. Analysing battery buildout in GB and Europe and impact on our revenues.
    2. Assessing whether to enter new geographic markets.
    3. Assessing which size and duration of projects to develop in each of our countries.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

A bit about you:

  • Desire to drive decisions through analysis and have a real impact on the business by producing clear and actionable analysis outputs under supervision
  • Ability to work and deliver quickly and efficiently in a dynamic environment with tight timescales and changing deadlines
  • Ability to source data from numerous sources and diligently produce usable and reliable sets of model inputs
  • Humble and hands-on team player able to work well with others at all levels and is keen to learn from others
  • Transparent and clear communicator

Experience and skills we look for:

  • Strong Excel modelling skills and experience using or developing market modelling tools, and ideally programming skills (Python)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good understanding of typical energy market functioning and mechanisms, in particular how market movements and key drivers impact the BESS business case
  • Ideally with a background in energy market analysis and insights within a specialist consultancy or practice, research environment, or energy market participant, however more important is a desire to learn, willing to jump into challenges and to be able to deliver quickly
