Job description

To provide operational and engineering support for maintenance activities within the Works Train Infrastructure Department. Responsibilities include assisting skilled technicians, preparing tools and equipment, moving materials, and shunting works trains within yards and tunnels during maintenance works. The role also involves maintaining clean and safe work areas, performing operational and administrative tasks, and contributing to the efficiency and reliability of the Works Train team. Full training will be provided, although prior technical knowledge or experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities
  • Comply with all Health and Safety regulations and site procedures.
  • Prepare tools, equipment, and materials for engineering tasks.
  • Assist with the safe movement and positioning of equipment under supervision.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of work areas and machinery.
  • Collect and deliver parts or materials as directed by the Works Train team.
  • Support preventative and corrective maintenance activities, including:
    • Tool handling
    • Parts cleaning, preparation, and painting
    • Disassembly and reassembly of components
    • Monitoring systems during large‑scale maintenance (LSM) activities
  • Carry out checks and record information in accordance with training and procedures.
  • Engage in learning new skills and participate in development training opportunities.
  • Work primarily outdoors or in workshop environments.
  • Tasks may involve working at height, manual handling, lifting, working in the running and service tunnels and prolonged standing.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols and use of protective clothing is mandatory.

  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools.

  • Additional training and certifications are offered for personal development (e.g., locomotive operation, PAT testing, fire extinguisher training).
