Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Department of Medicine for Older People team on Ward 5B, Whiston Hospital. Ward 5B is a 36-bed Medicine for Older People ward specialising in dementia and end of life care. The post involves working as part of the multi-disciplinary team to assess, implement and evaluate care needs for patients on an acute medical ward. There will be opportunities to expand knowledge and skills with an experienced multi-disciplinary team. The post holder must be flexible and available to work variable day and night shifts. An Enhanced DBS Certificate with both the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists is required. Interview Date – Week Commencing 29 September 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff and ensure the ward/department runs effectively in the absence of the Department Ward Manager.
  • Offer advice and support to colleagues to plan, monitor, implement and evaluate skilled and appropriate care, ensuring evidence-based practice.
  • Work within the NMC Code and professional nursing guidance.
  • Lead and coordinate clinical management activities, including patient flow within the unit (admission and discharge) and maintaining safe staffing levels.
  • Promote positive relations with patients, relatives and the local population, and represent the clinical area on working groups and external conferences as appropriate.
  • Attend and participate in corporate and service development activities; contribute to policy/protocol development relevant to the specialty.
  • Manage stock, equipment and resources efficiently.
  • Promote and deliver effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and with other wards and departments.
  • Participate in the business planning process to identify service development opportunities.
  • Initiate and coordinate investigations of incidents, accidents, and complaints in line with trust policies when required.
Clinical Management
  • Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualized care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations, including emergencies, with clinical competence in using specialised equipment.
  • Act as a clinical role model and leader for all staff, ensuring continuity of care and a high standard of nursing care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes, incorporating physiological, psychological, spiritual, socio-economic and cultural factors affecting patient care.
  • Contribute to setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the ward, liaising with medical staff and other disciplines.
  • Ensure care is delivered within the Nursing and Midwifery Scope of Professional Practice and Code of Professional Conduct; promote patient and relative involvement in care management.
  • Maintain safe custody of drugs and ensure safe administration procedures in line with statutory and trust requirements.
  • Undertake appropriate training to expand clinical skills and regularly take charge of the clinical area to manage resources and ensure safe staffing.
  • Identify clinical risks and act in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
  • Ensure nursing documentation meets Trust standards.
People Management
  • Assess development needs and create action plans; participate in orientation and staff development programs.
  • Monitor performance, support revalidation, and promote personal and professional development within the ward.
  • Utilise staffing resources effectively and efficiently; support team members and coordinate off-duty, annual leave and sickness absence.
Leadership Development
  • Promote a learning environment and participate in staff education and development, mentoring learners and the nursing team.
  • Contribute to a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors; assess learning needs and implement specialty-based teaching with clear objectives.
  • Maintain personal development for revalidation and oversee the continuing professional development of a delegated group of staff.
  • Supervise and support junior nurses, students and HCAs to maintain high nursing standards; share specialist knowledge within the Trust where appropriate.
Budget and Resources
  • Ensure efficient use of resources, stock management and equipment care/maintenance.
  • Handle patients’ valuables safely and authorise timesheets for temporary nursing and support staff as appropriate.
Research and Audit
  • Develop and implement audits of nursing practice; promote awareness of current nursing research and apply findings to practice where relevant.
  • Promote dissemination of local and national research findings; identify audit needs, collect and analyse data and contribute to service improvement.
Personal Development
  • Maintain own continuing professional development and participate in trust knowledge and skills development processes.
  • Identify development needs, interests and training requirements; maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for revalidation.
