Volunteer Leader – Grove Road Depot

About the role
We are looking for an organized, proactive, and engaging volunteering leader to support the Area Operations Manager. You will provide guidance to a growing number of active volunteers and our in‑house team that helps maintain, conserve, and improve the environment and heritage of the waterway network for local communities and visitors to enjoy.
Key responsibilities
- Organise, control, and lead volunteer groups, volunteer task days, volunteer lock keepers, and our in‑house team.
- Lead and attend events to publicise the work of the Trust, promote our activities, and recruit new volunteers.
- Provide relief river lock keeper duties and develop new volunteering opportunities on river locks.
- Deliver training to volunteers in accordance with set standards.
- Identify opportunities for volunteers, record work and hours delivered, and ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials, etc.) is appropriate, in good condition, and used correctly.
- Prepare safe systems of work, induct volunteers onsite, and manage safe delivery.
- Support communication within the team, share relevant corporate messages, and provide feedback from volunteers to the Area Operations Manager to enhance planning.
- Actively involve in day‑to‑day tasks such as lock keeping, water control, vegetation management, small projects, planned maintenance, and assist the Area Operations Manager in task planning.
- Ensure environmental and heritage issues are considered in all work undertaken.
- Deliver pre‑planned maintenance of structures and undertake minor repairs as part of a small team.
Qualifications
- Experience working in relevant environments such as volunteering, environmental works, customer service operations, or maintenance.
- Experience leading a small team.
- Excellent organisational and prioritising skills.
- Effective and engaging communication skills.
- Computer literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- UK driving licence.
- Self‑motivated, able to work flexible hours, and communicate well with customers, volunteers, and staff at all levels.
