Responsibilities
  • The post holder will be a member of Immunisation team and work alongside the Immunisation Team Leader providing professional support and leadership to team members.
  • The role combines both managerial and clinical elements; you will provide day to day management for the immunisation team whilst supporting the delivery of the national childhood immunisation programme across the Mersey Care Footprint.
  • You will also provide expert advice to the wider 0 - 19 children's nursing teams in addition to practice nurses, parents, carers, and children and young people advising about immunisations.
  • Operational management of the Immunisation team including personal development reviews, supervision, assist with recruitment, selection, induction and retention of staff.
  • You will be involved in education and clinical practice development, including providing training to Mersey Care Staff and be involved in audit and policy reviews as required.
  • You will be responsible for the organisation, smooth running and administration of the nurse led immunisation sessions across the wide variety of venues that are utilised.
  • You will also be active in the follow up of non-immunised children/ defaulters; providing information, advice and updating data as required, liaising closely with relevant health professionals, and making appropriate arrangements or referrals.
  • To take the lead on immunisation training courses, support competency building of new immunisers and to act as an expert resource for health professionals and parents.
  • Assist with any local & national immunisation campaigns including outbreaks.
  • Responsible for the provision of appropriate, high-quality care to children and young people.
  • Responsible for workload planning and delegation of work to other team members, considering competence.
  • Work in partnership with other professionals to enable patients/clients to be maintained in an appropriate environment, thus avoiding hospital admission.
  • Provide advice to patients, clients and carers on vaccinations and a wide range of health issues to include health promotion, lifestyle advice and health care.
  • Provide clinical support and training to experienced and new staff within the immunisation team and wider Mersey Care child health teams.
  • In conjunction with the team leader, develop new ways of working to provide a responsive service to Children, young people and their families.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with relevant agencies and professionals across health, social care and education services.
  • Maintain registration in line with professional requirements.
  • Clinically lead, direct, mentor and support the team with regular clinical and managerial supervision.
  • To demonstrate leadership by means of effective change within own scope of practice, when and where appropriate.
  • Making recommendations to improve practice identified through influencing, motivating, and enabling others to contribute towards the effectiveness and success of the Trust.
  • To demonstrate accountability in the use and management of all resources including financial resources.
  • To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with patients and carers who may have difficulties understanding complex information due to speech and language difficulties, sensory loss, learning difficulties, depression etc.
  • Acts as an advocate for the patient and continually demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, carers and children and young people.
  • Be a role model to team members and students so that patients/clients receive the most effective care.
  • Contribute to the development of policy and services to reflect the needs of the local neighbourhood population.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the clinical team canvas.
  • Provide information to the team leader on staff and patient/client activity as requested, to enable the effective management of the service.
  • Support the team leader in the implementation of practice development, improvement and service modernisation initiatives.
  • Support the team leader by monitoring and recording sickness and absence, capability and other issues within the team, reporting them as soon as possible.
  • In conjunction with others, provide day-to-day supervision and support for the team.
  • Support the team leader in providing induction to the local working environment, clinical services and policies for new team members.
  • Undertake personal development plans with other members of the team, as delegated.
  • Act as an authorised signatory for mileage and timecards for submission.
  • To be responsible and accountable for your own work including the management of patients that are in your team.
  • To perform clinical and environmental risk assessments to optimise the health and safety of patients and staff in a variety of settings.
  • To be responsible for the clinical assessment of children requiring immunisation which includes planning, administration, education and offering appropriate support and guidance to parents/carers.
  • To coordinate the ordering of vaccines, equipment and their safe storage by support staff, ensuring emergency equipment/ drugs are in date and easily accessible.
  • To liaise with GPs to obtain accurate immunisation histories from their records, to support planning and ensure accurate and up to date patient records.
  • To be a resource providing professional expert advice regarding immunisations to peers, colleagues, GPs, parents and carers.
  • To be able to seek further specialist advice and act upon if appropriate or to signpost as required.
  • To be competent and confident in offering a nurse-led immunisation service working mostly under the legal framework of Patient Group Directions: Routine Child Immunisations School based immunisations Fluenz.
  • Maintains competency in emergency treatment (faints/ anaphylaxis) and ensures access to emergency equipment.
  • Participate in individual and group supervision.
  • Monitor record keeping within the team and inform the team leader of any concerns or incidents.
  • Support the training and development of team members who need to improve on the level of patient care; this includes record keeping and improving clinical competency.
  • Support the implementation of any initiatives to improve quality of care within the clinical governance.
  • Participate in patient satisfaction reporting to improve patient care.
  • Work with the team leader to ensure achievement of your own personal development.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and competence in line with professional and service requirements and demonstrate critical thinking, decision-making and reflective skills to ensure own professional registration.
  • Support the Team Leader in creating an environment in which learning, and practice development is fostered, evaluated and implemented.
  • Facilitate effective learning within the area of practice for all students and new staff.
  • Facilitate pre and post registration student placements within the service.
  • Participation in clinical audits and research, as required.
  • The post holder shall as necessary provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues.
  • The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation.
