About the role
We are looking for a consultant orthopaedic and geriatric medicine specialist to provide specialist medical input to the trauma unit and the Redlands Elective Orthopaedic Unit at Royal Berkshire Hospital. The role involves overseeing pre‑operative assessment and post‑operative medical care for silver trauma and fragility fracture patients, and liaising between surgical and medical teams.
Responsibilities
- Provide specialist medical input for silver trauma and fragility fractures.
- Oversee pre‑operative assessment and post‑operative care for fragility fracture patients over 65.
- Optimize patients pre‑operatively in collaboration with surgical, anaesthetic and medical teams.
- Perform post‑operative reviews, identify, manage and refer medical complications where appropriate.
- Attend daily MDT board rounds and clinical ward rounds to ensure continuity of care and patient flow.
- Work alongside therapists to support patients in achieving rehabilitation goals.
- Organise ‘best interest’ meetings with families for patients with cognitive impairment to decide on discharge destinations.
- Consider ongoing management of osteoporosis with consultant support.
- Identify patients who are medically fit for discharge.
- Support junior members of the team on all aspects of peri‑operative medical care.
- Liaise with the Redlands team regarding the medical aspects of elective peri‑operative care.
- Undertake audits and present data as required.
- Use patient and hospital databases to manage patient records.
Qualifications
- Full registration with the GMC.
- Advanced Life Support certificate.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Evidence of achievement of Core‑Medical Training (CMT) competencies or equivalent.
- Minimum 6 months NHS experience at middle‑grade level.
- Experience in acute medical specialties and managing patients on unselected medical take.
- Specific management of geriatric syndromes including dementia and fragility fractures.
Desirable Criteria
- Completion of a Quality Improvement Project.
- Good IT skills and experience using patient and hospital databases.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work within an MDT.
- Strong communication skills in written and spoken English.
- Willingness to take responsibility and exert appropriate authority.
