This role offers opportunities for education, research involvement, and the chance to work in one of the largest cardiothoracic and vascular centres in the UK. The position is designed for motivated individuals looking to advance their career in cardiothoracic surgery, providing comprehensive training and a supportive environment for professional growth and development.
We are looking for registrars with previous cardiothoracic surgical experience who are motivated, enthusiastic, and wish to pursue a career in this specialty. The role offers a local weekly education programme with options to engage in concurrent research and audit projects, and opportunities to attend pan‑Thames training days and courses at the Royal College of Surgeons.
The position provides a resident rota and a non‑resident on‑call rota, both EWTD compliant at band 1A with built‑in internal cross‑cover. Access to local educational events, research projects, and training days at the Royal College of Surgeons enhances professional growth.
While specific daily duties will evolve with the team, key responsibilities include participation in surgical procedures, patient care, clinical governance, and contribution to research and audit activities within the Barts Heart Centre.
The Barts Heart Centre is the largest cardiothoracic and vascular centre in the UK, comprising the cardiothoracic units from St Bartholomew’s, the London Chest and the Heart hospitals. It serves a population of 6 million and offers state‑of‑the‑art management for adult cardiac, thoracic, and adult congenital (GUCH) conditions. The centre includes nine operating theatre suites with two hybrid theatres dedicated to complex aortic stenting and TAVI procedures, and performs over 2,000 cardiac and 800 thoracic procedures annually by a team of 23 consultant surgeons. Supporting services include a 54‑bed level 3/2 intensive care unit, additional ward beds, a comprehensive cardiology department, a respiratory department with a cystic fibrosis unit, and a large academic anaesthetic department.
Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country and a leading healthcare provider. The trust is on an improvement journey toward becoming an outstanding organisation with a world‑class clinical reputation, delivering consistently high standards of harm‑free care and patient safety. The vision is to be a high‑performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, providing safe and compassionate care to patients in east London and beyond.
We strive to live by our WeCare values and behaviours, promoting inclusion and ensuring every staff member feels a sense of belonging. Differences are valued, and we fully support an inclusive working environment.
