Job description

The Sterile Services department (SSD) provides essential services of reprocessing surgical instruments and Endoscopy for use in wards and departments within the trust and outside practices.

As an SSD Technician you will have the opportunity to work within a friendly and skilled team, providing essential support to clinical service providers. You will be involved in the decontamination, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilising and distributing of surgical instrumentation for supply to Wards, Departments, Theatres and Endoscopy.

The role is physically demanding, pushing, pulling, lifting and handling heavy instrument sets and long periods of standing. It is necessary to transport theatre equipment around the hospital using trolleys.

The successful candidate will be required to work 1 weekend in 3 and 2 Bank Holidays in the year.

Shifts will be: 14:00 - 22:00 hrs

Main duties of the job
  • To liaise with service users on routine matters.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and the Team Leader(s).
  • Collection of used items from departments, theatres and wards throughout the hospital site as required.
  • Sorting, checking and processing used surgical instruments and other items using appropriate machinery.
  • Attain familiarity with surgical instruments and their use and demonstrate ability to dismantle and reassemble instruments ready for surgery.
