We are seeking an enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to join our friendly, supportive team at the highly specialist and well sought-after Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit.

Located in trendy South East London, 10 minutes-walk away from the pretty cafes and boutiques of Greenwich, the unit has a 19-bed Level 1 Highly Specialist Cognitive-Behavioural ward and a Level 2 Neurorehabilitation ward with 18 beds. Both wards provide specialist treatment to patients with physical and cognitive impairments resulting from an acquired / traumatic brain injury.

What you'll be working

This role is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the role
  • Assisting the Speech and Language Therapy team in providing evidence-based intervention to a range of complex neurological patients. You will be supported to deliver essential communication and swallowing therapy, contributing greatly to each patient’s care and therapeutic outcomes
  • Developing expert interpersonal skills to liaise with patients, their loved ones, and to work alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team
  • Building on your own skills and competencies to be able to independently organise and run fun and evidence-based communication groups to help patients generalise the skills they have developed in 1:1 sessions
  • Contributing to a fun and vibrant team, where workplace experience is fundamental
What you'll be doing
  • Take responsibility for a designated caseload under supervision of the SLT team
  • Work closely with patients, carers/families, and other professionals to manage and set targets for care/management plans
  • Keep people safe from any harm and protect their human rights
  • Advocate for persons with communication difficulty, to ensure access to all levels of service and allow for informed decision making
  • Co-ordinate the running of the groups programme under guidance of the SLT team
  • Attend relevant training and development to maintain and develop skills and knowledge
  • Be responsible for the ordering, maintenance, and auditing of equipment in the SLT department as necessary
