Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit a senior experienced lawyer in the field of clinical negligence to join our growing team. If you would like to make a positive difference and work in an organisation that truly values its staff, this role may interest you.

Main Duties

The post holder will have a varied case load including birth injuries, multi‑party claims and spinal injuries. You will be a senior member of one of our four clinical negligence teams, supporting more junior staff, playing a key strategic role in the department and building close client relationships. We represent all the Health Boards and Trusts in Wales and pride ourselves on the quality of our service. Senior lawyers play a pivotal role in delivering change across Wales and in the development and wellbeing of our staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

• Manage and lead complex clinical negligence litigation cases. • Provide strategic legal advice to the team and senior leadership. • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, Health Boards and Trusts. • Mentor and supervise junior team members. • Promote innovation and continuous improvement within the department.

Qualifications and Knowledge
  • Law degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (or equivalent). A qualified lawyer admitted to the roll of solicitors of England and Wales; or a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) with the Civil Proceedings Advocacy certification; or a qualified barrister admitted to the bar in England and Wales.
  • Relevant legal knowledge in clinical negligence and civil litigation.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Background working within the NHS or public sector.
  • Advocacy skills and experience of writing reports for senior and executive audiences.
  • Welsh language skills.
Experience
  • Substantial post‑qualification experience in clinical negligence or related fields.
  • Extensive experience drafting legal documents and managing complex cases.
  • Experience of managing people and leading teams.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience reviewing large numbers of documents.
  • Expertise in defendant litigation and presenting to legal staff.
Skills and Attributes
  • Highly computer literate, with the ability to learn new technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication on complex legal matters.
  • Strong negotiation skills, particularly in challenging or emotional circumstances.
  • Effective time‑management and organisational abilities.
  • Leadership qualities, including coaching, training and mentoring.
  • Enthusiasm for professional development and enhancing the department’s reputation.
Desirable Skills and Attributes
  • Experience of producing senior‑level reports and using social media for professional promotion.
  • Welsh speaking ability.
