Job description
Overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Financial Accountant to support the Chief Accountant on a wide range of technical financial matters. This is a senior role with responsibility for delivering the Council’s Statement of Accounts, managing the Treasury Management function, overseeing capital accounting and returns, and leading on bank reconciliations and financial controls.

You will take ownership of the asset register and the Council’s Capital Programme, from budget setting and monitoring to year-end accounting, ensuring full compliance with accounting standards and statutory requirements. Day to day, you will also manage treasury activity and cash flows, address emerging financial risks, maintain up-to-date procedures, and provide effective leadership to two direct reports.

Qualifications

We’re seeking a qualified accountant (CCAB) with strong technical expertise in financial accounting, in depth knowledge of Local Authority Finance and a solid understanding of IFRS and the Code of Practice on Local Authority Accounting in the UK. You’ll have proven expertise in financial systems, legislation, and organisational financial management, along with an appreciation of the information and resource needs of senior managers and elected Members.

Details

The post is offered on a full time, permanent basis (36 hours per week). The Council operates a hybrid working system where employees may work three days per week from home (depending on department requirements).
