Job description
Position Overview

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the post of Renal Cancer Fellow (Post‑CCT) to commence on the 1st October 2027 for a period of 12 months. This fellowship is a recognised post by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and BAUS, which will provide an excellent opportunity for a senior trainee who wants to develop a career in Upper Urinary Tract Surgery. It is also a designated EAU Robotic Urology Section (ERUS) host centre.

About the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer

The Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer (SCKC) is a tertiary centre with a unique multidisciplinary tumour board (MDT). By centralising referral of patients with renal masses to the Royal Free Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer, a high‑volume centre for the treatment of all stages of kidney cancer including upper urinary tract urothelial cancer (UUTUC) has been developed. Currently, the annual surgical volume is close to 450 renal surgeries while 80‑90 patients are being discussed at the weekly MDT.

Patients are seen by a multidisciplinary team in the renal clinic and care pathways for all surgical renal diseases, including fast‑track biopsy of renal lesions, have been developed. This places the Royal Free Renal Cancer Service in a unique position in Europe as possibly the highest volume centre in Western Europe and its is within the surgical volume range of North American world‑class renal cancer centres.

Training and Experience

The fellow will gain skills in open, laparoscopic and robotic upper urinary tract surgery for all aspects of both benign and cancer diseases. We are also one of the few centres to perform in addition to routine upper tract robotic surgery, robotic caval thrombectomy, renal transplant and ureterolysis. The appointee will participate in the Specialist Registrars’ rota.

Suitable Candidates

This post is most suitable for Post FRCS (Urol) or for equivalent candidates who are post‑CCT ready to focus on sub‑speciality training in upper urinary tract cancer and benign surgery. You will be joining an innovative department with excellent opportunities for both clinical/surgical experience, research and continuing education.

Links and Associations

The Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer is located at the Royal Free Hospital and is also associated with University College London Partners (UCL Partners) with a good infrastructure for research and has multiple links to leading research departments, including the Sanger and the Crick Institute.

The SCKC is also represented at the Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE), ensuring the Centre’s role in benchmarking examination standards for future urologists.
