To provide continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed and teaching of staff in training, and the multidisciplinary team.

Maintaining flexible arrangements for emergency cover and a provision of cover for colleagues during reasonable periods of leave.

Provision of an out-of-hours service with colleagues on the Tier 3 or 4 rota.

Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for resident doctors, medical students and other healthcare staff in the specialty.

Assist in the supervision & training of medical staff/students, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.

Responsibilities

The ED has 24/7 middle grade clinical cover & extended Consultant cover to 8am‑2am 7 days per week. Post-holders in this grade will participate in the Tier 4 rota at "bleep‑holding level". Duties within the Emergency Department will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for both those patients seen in the Emergency Department and inpatients on our observation ward.

Clinical duties will include taking a lead role in the management of acutely ill or traumatised patients. The qualities of leadership required as head of an emergency team are stressed and it is anticipated that these qualities will be gradually learned through the process of supervision of more junior doctors and involvement in their education – both formal and informal.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time‑manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.

A Consultant educational supervisor for the period of the appointment will be allocated. The post holder will be expected to complete workplace based assessments to allow documentation of their own development and develop a personal learning plan with regular review.

The successful applicants will gain clinical experience across all of these teams, whilst also engaging with the clinical rota when appropriate.
