Senior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care - Royal Brompton Hospital

The adult Critical Care (CC) Department, adheres to national standards as set out by GPICS and currently consists of 3 areas -AICU, an 18 bedded ward, PACU (recovery) a 10 bedded ward, and Elizabeth (EICU) a 24 bedded ward,admitting approximately 1200 patients per year with a variety of cardiological and respiratory diseases and post procedural/operative cardiovascular and thoracic cases. Tertiary and quaternary services include Grown Up Congenital Heart (GUCH) disease, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis and asthma, and minimally invasive cardiological interventions. RBH provides a severe acute respiratory failure referral service for the South-West of England and is commissioned as one of 5 national ECMO centres.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will take part in the senior fellow rota consisting of a combination of Health Education England (HEE) trainees and senior clinical fellows (SCF). This is currently 2 x one-in-eight full shift resident rota (subject to change dependent on staffing). The rota is fully compliant with national terms and meets the requirements for national training programmes. All doctors whether in a training programme have access to the same training and educational opportunities and bespoke individualised training is possible after discussion with Educational Supervisor.

The Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) is a specialist cardiothoracic centre specialising in diseases of the heart and lung, with services for adults (Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Radiology, and Thoracic Medicine) and Paediatrics. It has approximately 2,081 staff, 296 beds, 6 operating theatres, 5 catheter laboratories, a private patients' ward and extensive imaging facilities. A state-of-the-art Diagnostic Centre opened in January 2022. The Hospital benefits from a joint cardiac and respiratory clinical research facility and has strong links both with King's College London/ King's Health Partners and the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be part of the critical care team based across the Royal Brompton critical care units as required.
  • To participate in medical audit.
  • To participate in the education and supervision of medical trainees and other staff.
  • Critical care echocardiography (TTE and TOE); rom FEEL/FICE, BSE Level 1-2, CUSIC certification to BSE/EACVI accreditation and beyond
  • ECMO (VV and VA) and retrieval
  • Additional opportunities maybe possible after discussion (respiratory medicine, pulmonary hypertension, anaesthesia, transfer medicine, GUCH, ICU follow up, management & leadership, education)

The units have consultant cover 24/7, onsite day times Monday to Sunday, and additional consultant cover is provided for ECMO retrieval.

There is an active teaching programme covering general and specialist critical care, as well as targeted teaching for relevant postgraduate examinations, either locally or in collaboration with neighbouring institutions.

The unit teaches and trains undergraduate students from Imperial University and has numerous honorary visiting fellows. The postholder would be expected to support these teaching activities.
