Job description

As a Duty Instructor, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of our Activity Centre, delivering exceptional customer experiences while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, and professionalism. This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring flexibility to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Our Activity Centres are open 7 days a week.

Operational Supervision & Safety
  • Oversee daily activity operations, ensuring compliance with Welsh Water’s Health and Safety Management Systems.
  • Supervise the activity team and maintain accurate safety documentation.
  • Ensure the safety of all visitors, staff and participants in land and water‑based activities, following company procedures for incident reporting.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Act as a role model for the activity team, providing guidance, training and support to deliver high‑quality activities.
  • Assume full responsibility for the centre and team in the absence of the Activity Manager or Deputy Manager.
Customer Service & Communication
  • Deliver outstanding customer service by maintaining professionalism and water safety standards.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to activity enquiries and group bookings.
  • Communicate enthusiastically and knowledgeably with visitors, promoting a positive image of Welsh Water.
Equipment & Site Maintenance
  • Maintain high standards of equipment care, repair and cleanliness to ensure availability and safety.
  • Support site upkeep, including reservoir safety, biosecurity, litter picking and building maintenance.
  • Follow routines for opening and closing the site, including cash handling and managing equipment issue and return.
Community & Business Support
  • Assist with conservation, educational and recreational activities, including open days and events.
  • Collaborate with third‑party organisations such as wildlife charities and volunteer groups.
  • Provide cross‑departmental support when required (e.g., café or Ranger team).
Qualifications & Experience
  • A Water sport National Governing Body qualification (e.g., RYA Senior Instructor, British Canoeing Coach, UKCC Level 2 Coach), or be working towards one of these, along with prior experience.
  • Experience supervising and motivating a team.
  • Managing and implementing health & safety records and procedures.
  • Working with the general public.
  • Delivering water or land activities to individuals and groups of different ages and abilities.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day.
  • Ability to work independently and on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • IT literate – we use a variety of computer systems which we will teach you.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.

What You’ll Do

You’ll join a great team of colleagues at the Visitors Centre. A flexible approach and teamwork is essential. You will be a key member of the activity team and able to communicate in an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful way to visitors, advocating for Welsh Water at all times. You will help develop a business plan to ensure growth, success and sustainability. You will deliver effective leadership and advocate key development of your team. You will be required to follow high levels of health and safety and deliver best practice at all times ensuring customers have a memorable experience. You should have a proven success at building relationships with both internal and external customers, dynamic and able to communicate in a constructive and knowledgeable way, projecting a positive / professional image of Welsh Water at all times.

About Our Visitor Centres

We attract over 1 million visitors a year to our five visitor centres, located in some of the most stunning locations around Wales. We offer a wide range of facilities and activities, including water sports, mountain biking, angling, walking and a great cup of coffee or tasty meal in our cafes which have some of the best views in Wales. Our visitor centres provide a unique opportunity for us to engage with our customers and visitors in a beautiful environment, whilst reinforcing our brand identity. We are also proud of the important role that our visitor centres play in delivering our education, conservation and biodiversity ambitions. There has never been a more exciting time to join us. Over the past five years, we have been investing in our visitor centres to improve facilities and the offering to our customers. We continue to roll out our multi‑million pound improvement programme across existing sites and are planning new recreational facilities for the future.

Schedule & Availability
  • Operating hours are from 6.30am – 8.30pm. We require a combination of early, daytime, evening and weekend shift cover from April – September 2026 (6‑month contract).
  • Start as soon as possible – training days to start ASAP, ideally completing a couple of weekends before the 2026 season commences.
