Job description

At Places for People, safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. We are committed to creating safe communities for our customers and colleagues by protecting children, young people, and adults at risk from harm, abuse, and neglect. We follow robust safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring all employees, volunteers, and contractors uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and accountability. Our recruitment process includes pre‑employment checks, including Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks where applicable, to promote a safe and secure working environment. By joining Places for People, you are expected to contribute to our safeguarding culture, following our policies and reporting concerns to protect those in our communities.

Osterna, part of RMG and Places for People Group, is looking for an experienced Residential Fire Risk Assessor to join a proactive and highly successful team of Health & Safety Professionals covering a patch across Watford and surrounding areas. You will be home‑based when not undertaking site visits, completing up to 10 site visits a week (Monday to Friday). Although we are seeking an assessor based in the Watford area, national travel may be required.

What's our USP? With the emphasis on quality over quantity, our Residential Fire Risk Assessors enjoy a work‑life balance rarely seen in this sector. You can choose which days you travel to sites and which days you work from home writing reports. Risk assessment reports are usually confined to the common internal and external areas for residential developments.

What does the role involve?

Specialising in the residential housing sector, you will carry out inspections of a range of property types, including traditional residential blocks, sheltered housing, HMOs, and high‑rise (over 18 metres) housing. You will write up reports with your findings. Completed risk assessments are used by Property Managers and Directors to initiate repairs or other procedures required to keep residential common areas safe.

What knowledge, skills and experience are we looking for?
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.
  • Experience undertaking fire risk assessment work within the residential property sector on high‑rise buildings.
  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Level 3 NEBOSH National General Certificate.
  • Experience of undertaking suitable and sufficient Health and Safety and Type 1 and Type 3 Fire Risk Assessments (HSFRA), and Compartmentation Surveys.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail within your reports, and a comprehensive knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation and its application to property management.
  • Knowledge of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and supporting local government guidance.
  • LaCORS experience would be great, although not essential; training will be provided.

Osterna Limited specialises in Health & Safety compliance in the residential property sector. We are Safe Contractor approved and an NSI approved provider of high‑quality, fully compliant BAFESP205 Fire Risk Assessments on properties throughout the UK.

Benefits
  • 27 days holiday plus all Bank Holidays.
  • Option to buy/sell up to 5 days annual leave each holiday year.
  • Life Assurance Cover.
  • Free Healthcare cashback Plan, including optical treatment, dental care, physiotherapy and GP charges, plus 24/7 access to remote GP services.
  • Sponsorship for study and professional qualifications (up to 4 study days).
  • Pension scheme (matched up to 7%) and life assurance (4 × annual salary).
  • Access to Our Place Rewards, offering a wide range of shopping discounts, in‑store vouchers, reloadable e‑cards, cashback on online purchases and exclusive offers.
