We are seeking aRegistered Mental Health Nurse (Band 5) to join our dedicated team on a 15-bedded acute mental health ward in Yeovil. You will work within a multidisciplinary team that includes Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, and medical professionals. Together, we provide compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to individual needs.

As a Registered Mental Health Nurse, you will deliver specialist care to adults experiencing severe and complex mental health crises. Your role involves rapid assessment, planning, and delivery of interventions to stabilise patients and support their recovery. This is a fast-paced environment that requires resilience, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to compassionate care.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to adults in acute mental health crisis.
  • Undertake rapid assessment, care planning, and implementation of therapeutic interventions.
  • Administer medication safely and in line with Trust policy.
  • Monitor and manage clinical risk, ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Use de-escalation techniques and therapeutic communication to manage challenging situations.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and adhere to NMC standards.
  • Act as a keyworker for designated patients, supporting their recovery journey.
  • Supervise and support junior staff and students, promoting best practice.

Job responsibilities

You will:

  • Lead the clinical management of designated patients, assessing, planning, and implementing nursing care.
  • Observe, report, and record changes in patients' physical and mental health.
  • Provide and supervise personal care and daily living activities, ensuring dignity and respect.
  • Deliver therapeutic activities and emotional support while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Undertake physical health observations and elevate concerns appropriately.
  • Ensure completion and review of clinical and risk assessments in line with Trust policy.
  • Work within legal and professional frameworks, including the Mental Health Act and safeguarding requirements.
  • Participate in clinical governance, supervision, and continuous professional development.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture, supporting staff wellbeing and morale.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification Registered Mental Health Nurse Appropriately registered with the NMC as per post requirements
  • Teaching/Assessor qualification
Experience
  • Experience of working in multi-agency services
Additional Criteria
  • Must be a car driver with a valid driving licence or have access to transport with appropriate business insurance in order to travel throughout the Trust, to meet the needs of the service
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and to have undertaken post registration training
