Job description
Overview

Advert: Internal Redeployment Only - Bioinformatics and Genomics Training Development Officer, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University. This post is open only to current Cardiff University staff eligible for redeployment. Although appointed by Cardiff University, the role involves working at/with Wellcome Connecting Science, based in Cambridge (Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton CB10 1SA). The ISO in a Box project is funded by Wellcome and aims to develop tools and training to simplify ISO accreditation for genomics and bioinformatics in laboratories in Low and Middle Income Countries.

The post will deliver training programs to enhance capabilities of genomic/bioinformatic researchers, bioinformaticians, public health and clinical staff. Training will focus on software development for ISO-ready workflows and SOPs to enable ISO certification, ensuring laboratories can implement standardised genomics and bioinformatics workflows for disease management and surveillance. The Training Specialist/Developer/Coordinator will contribute to enhancing laboratory capabilities and the capacity to implement standardised workflows for health outcomes. The work involves international collaboration with partners in Africa and elsewhere, with the project team based in Cambridge, Cardiff and Cape Town.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed-term position until 31 July 2028, available immediately. Salary: £33,951 - £36,636 per annum (Grade 5). Closing date: Friday, 3 October 2025. Cardiff University is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. Applications may be submitted in Welsh and English.

Job Description

As part of the ISO-in-a-box programme, the Training Developer will work closely with project partners who develop standardised bioinformatics tools and workflows. The primary goal is to scale up deployment by creating and delivering professional-level training programs, primarily short courses, to support adoption in laboratories and research settings across Africa and the UK. These efforts aim to integrate standardised workflows into clinical and public health laboratories, enhancing disease management and public health outcomes.

Key Duties
  • Lead the end-to-end development process for training, working with Iso-in-a-box subject matter experts and partners to customise content for professional-level audiences, including research and public health bioinformaticians and end-users.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across various regions to assess training needs and adapt content for relevant workforce groups.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools and outside bodies as required.
  • Undertake administrative tasks to support the department.
  • Determine suitable delivery methods for training, utilising formats such as virtual sessions, MOOCs, and in-person workshops to optimise learning outcomes.
  • Establish and support communities of practice to encourage continuous learning and collaboration among participants and stakeholders.
  • Develop educational resources, collect feedback, and implement improvements to maintain and enhance course quality and effectiveness.
Specific Duties
  • Collaborate with project partners and SMEs to draft, edit, and finalise training materials for professional audiences, covering topics such as bioinformatics SOPs and sustainable coding practices.
  • Conduct surveys, interviews, and focus groups to identify training needs and reflect them in course content and delivery.
  • Evaluate and choose appropriate training delivery formats, adapting content for virtual, in-person, and hybrid sessions.
  • Tailor training development to ISO-in-a-box objectives, aligning skills development with outputs (e.g., SOPs) to enable integration of workflows with clinical and epidemiological data for disease management and surveillance.
  • Organise and coordinate logistics for training events, including scheduling, resource allocation, platform setup, distributing pre-event materials and gathering post-event feedback.
  • Manage educational resources on designated platforms, ensuring accessibility and alignment with best practices; collaborate with partners to maintain digital repositories and troubleshoot issues.
  • Facilitate online discussion forums and other platforms to promote collaboration; provide guidance to participants in applying standardised workflows.
  • Maintain records of training activities, track engagement, and compile summary reports on impact and outcomes.
  • Attend relevant workshops, conferences and training sessions to stay informed on advancements in bioinformatics standards and training methodologies, ensuring course content remains current.
Additional Information
General Duties
  • Ensure activities are conducted with high confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements when handling participant information.
  • Comply with Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity policies, ensuring a safe and inclusive training environment.
  • Perform additional duties to support the Iso-in-a-box programme and successful execution of educational activities.
  • The post holder may be required to travel internationally and/or work weekends; predominantly based at Wellcome Connecting Science, Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton, with some remote work possible and regular attendance in Cambridge.
