Overview

Are you passionate about using data to drive meaningful change in public health? At the London Borough of Merton, we are looking for a skilled Public Health Intelligence Specialist to join our Public Health Team. This role involves turning complex data into actionable insights to shape health services for children and families, tackle health inequalities, and improve outcomes across the borough.

Youll lead analytical projects, manage health intelligence systems, and present findings that influence strategic decisions. Youll work with ArcGIS and infographics software to visualise data and support decision making. We offer a collaborative environment with opportunities for professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Lead analytical projects and provide statistical and epidemiological advice to the organisation and strategic partnerships.
  • Develop, manage, and disseminate health intelligence information and systems to underpin public health action across disciplines.
  • Produce reports and visualisations, present complex information to a range of audiences, and translate analyses into actionable recommendations.
  • Support long-term plans for designated services and undertake research projects to support Public Health Intelligence service objectives.
  • Supervise and develop staff in statistics and epidemiological analyses; manage two or more analysts.
  • Monitor data and the surveillance function, quality assure data in reports and presentations.
  • Design and manage systems to input, store, and disseminate public health statistical and epidemiological information; integrate and link multiple data sets.
  • Respond to complex queries and ad-hoc requests, providing professional judgement to determine the most appropriate solutions (e.g., to support commissioning).
  • Participate in horizon scanning for new data opportunities and adapt to the needs of the department.
  • Communicate effectively with Public Health Team, Children Lifelong Learning Families (CLLF), and other groups; present information to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Essential: Masters level qualification or equivalent experience in statistics, epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Essential: Minimum two years in an analytical role; experience in line management of health intelligence staff; experience with multiple health-related datasets and information systems; experience in system development (writing queries and reports); ability to design and manage systems for inputting, storing, and disseminating public health data; experience analysing and interpreting health, healthcare, demographic, or local authority data; experience developing and delivering statistical/epidemiological presentations; project-based experience with competing priorities and deadlines; experience in reporting and presenting complex information to varied audiences; experience using ArcGIS and creating infographics for data visualisation.
  • Desirable: Experience supporting Public Health Specialty Registrars, apprentices, or early-career colleagues; experience contributing to JSNA, Health Needs Assessments, or Public Health Annual Reports; experience in survey design, audits, and research projects related to public health; familiarity with SafeStats or other national/regional health intelligence platforms; experience in quality assurance of health data and reports; horizon scanning experience; multi-agency or cross-department collaboration; policy development or service transformation through data insights.

The post holder will be employed by the London Borough of Merton as part of the Merton Public Health Team. The post holder will support the Public Health Information and Children Lifelong Learning Families function, assisting in the development and management of public health information to reflect local, regional, and national priorities. Specific projects include analysis and reporting on datasets focusing primarily on children and young people and providing information that enables a full understanding of health needs, addressing health inequalities, determining priorities for action, and disseminating findings from a wide range of analysis.

Main duties include ensuring high-quality and complex information from diverse sources is appropriately analysed and interpreted for operational and strategic decision-making; providing statistical and epidemiological advice; using ArcGIS and infographics to display analysis; supporting long-term service plans and research projects; developing staff in statistics and epidemiology; presenting complex information to varied audiences; quality assuring data and presentations; and assisting in horizon scanning for new data opportunities.
