Project Engineer 9-Month Contract
BESS Project. Scottish Highlands. Start January 2026

Contract Scotland is recruiting an experienced Project Engineer for a 9-month contract supporting the construction and delivery of a 50MW / 100MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Scottish Highlands.

This is a high-profile renewable energy infrastructure project, critical to grid stability and the UK s net-zero ambitions.

The role is site-based and delivery-focused, offering autonomy and responsibility during a key phase of construction and commissioning.

As the on-site Project Engineer, you will take ownership of day-to-day construction delivery, acting as the main interface between client, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders. Your focus will be safe, efficient, and compliant delivery to programme and budget.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Lead site activities with full accountability for HSE compliance
  • Act as principal on-site contact for client and supply chain
  • Manage subcontractors, progress, quality, and cost control
  • Coordinate logistics, materials, and plant
  • Maintain programme updates and accurate progress reporting
  • Oversee QA, inspections, testing, snagging, and handover documentation
  • Chair site meetings and produce concise management reports
  • Resolve technical and delivery issues pragmatically and efficiently
About You
  • Background in civil, electrical, mechanical engineering, or construction
  • Proven experience delivering engineering or energy projects on site
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Strong knowledge of H&S and CDM regulations
  • Confident using MS Project and Microsoft Office
  • Organised, commercially aware, and delivery-driven
  • Clear communicator with the ability to manage stakeholders effectively
Desirable
  • Experience in renewables, BESS, CHP, or power infrastructure
  • IOSH or SMSTS
  • Engineering qualification (Degree / HND / HNC)
