Primary Care Occupational Therapist - Work Health

WorkWell and Work Health are pioneering initiatives that support individuals with physical or mental health conditions to overcome barriers to employment, advocating for inclusive and healthy work-environments. Working collaboratively with employers, healthcare providers, and community services to promote sustainable work participation and recovery.

Occupational Therapy forms an essential part of the multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team in providing expert tailored rehabilitation and work-focused interventions. We are seeking two recruit two occupational therapists with diverse experiences across mental health and/or long term conditions to join us.

This role is based within Primary Care and aims to improve the quality of work and health advice provided to patients. The introduction of Occupational Therapy within primary care with an explicit focus on fit notes aims to optimise high quality advice and support for people with work related needs. You will support individuals to manage health conditions in the workplace, promote work retention and enable people to develop sustainable return to work strategies.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy within the primary care as part of a multi-disciplinary team to patients with work related needs.
  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy within the integrated as part of a multi-disciplinary team to patients within primary care.
  • To provide clinical case management for a caseload of patients who require occupational therapy.
  • Participate in rapid assessment and intervention for patients who present with a variety of work-related concerns including long term conditions and mental health needs.
  • To work autonomously at a level appropriate to clinical competence and within scope of professional practice.
  • To provide specialist/generalist training sessions for staff within primary care on work health related matters.
  • Contribute to the continuous evaluation of the service to ensure it is fit for purpose and increases choice through audit and research.
About us

The role will be employed within Coventry and Warwickshire ICB and based in one General Practice in Coventry. You will be supported by the Clinical Lead OT for WorkWell and Head of Allied Health Professions.

Job responsibilities

The principal duties of the role are:

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of individuals in your care as an occupational therapist.
  • To undertake the comprehensive assessment of occupational needs, including those with a complex presentation, using occupational therapy investigative and analytical skills.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently about clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management within occupational therapy provision.
  • To undertake comprehensive occupation-based assessment of patients, using investigative and analytical skills and to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to design a specialised programme of occupational therapy care.
  • To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to create an accurate occupational formulation plan, to recommend the best course of intervention and to develop comprehensive management strategies for the patient to enable return, retention of work role.
  • To use a range of standardised and non-standardised assessment tools and techniques to identify presenting strengths and difficulties from an occupational perspective.
  • To refine treatment techniques in line with the most recent evidence of clinical effectiveness by evaluating and implementing key developments and promoting discussion within primary care.
  • To devise individualised occupational therapy management or treatment plans which may be implemented and supported by other members of the multidisciplinary and multi-agency team.
  • To provide advice, teaching and instruction to relevant stakeholders, to promote understanding of the aims of therapy to ensure a consistent approach to work health.
  • To assess mental capacity, gain valid informed consent and can work within a legal framework with patients who lack this capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to overcome barriers to communication.
  • To consider the needs of carers and employers to ensure necessary support systems are in place and to involve them in the rehabilitation process.
  • To consider the potential psychological risk factors and functional implications of these.
  • Undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices using evidence-based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with the support of the audit team potentially resulting in recommendations for change.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date documentation in line with legal and departmental requirements and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters in line with professional standards.
  • Be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including the prompt recording, and reporting of accidents to senior staff, and ensuring that equipment is safe.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management and apply to work situation.
  • To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out your duties and to adhere to departmental policies, including competence to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through teaching, training, and supervision of practice.
  • Be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the service.
  • To provide teaching/training to other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team.
