Job Description:

Job Title: Power Electronics Engineer – Magnetics Specialist

Location: Near Bristol

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineer with deep expertise in the design, modelling, and development of magnetic components for advanced power conversion systems. This role will focus on the design and optimisation of transformers, inductors, and other magnetic assemblies used in high-performance DC/DC, AC/DC, and DC/AC converters.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, high-efficiency solutions for demanding applications in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, industrial, and renewable energy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop magnetic components (transformers, inductors, chokes) for high-frequency and high-power applications.
  • Perform electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical simulations to optimise designs for efficiency, size, and manufacturability.
  • Select appropriate core materials, winding techniques, and insulation systems for specific application requirements.
  • Collaborate with power electronics engineers to integrate magnetics into converter topologies (LLC, flyback, forward, full-bridge, resonant, etc.).
  • Validate designs through prototyping, laboratory testing, and compliance with relevant safety and EMC standards.
  • Support manufacturing partners in scaling designs from prototype to production, including cost and quality optimisation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to magnetic component performance in system-level testing.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new materials, processes, and design techniques in magnetics and power electronics.
  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in the design and optimisation of magnetics for power electronics applications.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of core material properties, loss modelling, and winding layout optimisation.
  • Knowledge of high-frequency switching devices (SiC, GaN) and their impact on magnetic design.
  • Familiarity with thermal management in compact magnetic designs.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and work closely with PCB and mechanical design teams.
  • Experience with planar magnetics design for high-density converters.
  • Knowledge of industry standards (UL, IEC, DO-160, MIL-STD, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience in winding, assembling, and testing magnetic prototypes.
  • Familiarity with digital control systems and their influence on magnetics performance.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in high-performance power conversion.
  • Collaborative and innovative working environment.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Career growth within a specialised engineering team.
