Qualifications

Operations Chemist

Salary £27,455 - £34,700

Hours 45 hours per week, typically 07:00 to 16:00

As an Operations Chemist at FCC Environment, you will carry out chemical and physical testing of wastes received for treatment or transfer, along with associated residues and process control samples. You will support waste acceptance decisions, ensure accurate completion of waste consignment and laboratory records, and provide technical input to site operations in line with environmental permits and legislation.

This vacancy is for a full-time position, working five days per week.

What will you be doing?
  • Carrying out chemical and physical analysis of wastes, including residues and process control samples
  • Inspecting and testing wastes to confirm suitability for acceptance
  • Interpreting laboratory results and producing clear, accurate reports
  • Completing and maintaining waste consignment documentation and laboratory records
  • Undertaking waste analysis using instrumental and wet chemistry methods
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and applying quality control and calibration procedures
  • Supporting site operations to ensure compliance with environmental permits, legislation, and FCC procedures
  • Assisting with investigations, audits and inspections as required
  • Identifying appropriate safety and process considerations to ensure wastes are handled safely
  • Liaising with operational teams, managers, and other stakeholders
  • Ensuring all work is carried out in line with health, safety and environmental requirements
What are we looking for?
  • A degree in Chemistry or a related discipline (or minimum HND in Chemistry)
  • Experience in laboratory analysis, ideally within waste, wastewater, or environmental testing
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste classification and consignment note systems (desirable)
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with close attention to detail
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and communicate with stakeholders at all levels
  • A flexible approach to work, including availability to work overtime at short notice when required
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental compliance
