Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is required.
  • Familiarity with a workshop or manufacturing environment.

Certain Advantage is hiring for a Mechanical Design Engineer based within commutable distance of Chesterfield.

This role is on a permanent basis and is office-based.

Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on taking your ideas from concept to creation, with input all the way through design, prototyping, to completion?

This is an excellent opportunity to join a specialist contractor that designs and manufactures its own equipment - from lightweight aluminium access platforms to excavator- and slope-mounted drilling rigs, for use on challenging geotechnical projects across the UK. You’ll be joining a small, friendly and collaborative team, where your skills and expertise will be valued.

The Role

This role is for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys problem-solving and turning ideas into manufacturable solutions. You will work closely with the onsite manufacturing team for the design and manufacture of specialist drilling and construction equipment.

Day to day you will
  • Lead design for slope stabilisation drilling equipment and rope access systems
  • Develop new concepts into detailed 3D designs using SolidWorks
  • Produce manufacturable drawings and prototype assemblies
  • Work closely with operations teams and suppliers to optimise equipment for use and production
  • Conduct design calculations and FEA to verify strength and safety
  • Support continual improvement of existing equipment through design optimisation
  • Spend time in the workshop reviewing prototypes, troubleshooting, and refining builds
The Individual
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar design-focused role
  • Knowledge of FEA and hand calculations
  • Practical mindset and familiarity with a workshop / manufacturing environment
