A prominent NHS hospital trust in Whitstable is seeking a full-time cardiologist for a 12-month contract starting April 2026. The role includes conducting outpatient clinics, providing immediate cardiac care, and participating in advanced cardiac procedures using state-of-the-art technologies. Candidates should have clinical expertise in managing coronary disease and a passion for working in a supportive and transformative healthcare environment. Strong collaborative skills are essential as the role involves coordinating with other departments and practitioners.
This is a fixed term contract for 12 months, to commence April 2026. Cardiology in East Kent Hospitals is one of the largest services in the South East, and is the regional heart attack centre for the 1.4 million population of Kent and Medway, and is the 7th busiest in the UK.
The PPCI rota involves intervention operators from the other PPCI centres of Kent. There is a 1:9 consultant of the week rota (including weekends), covering WHH and QEQM. Depending on competencies, there is a 1:8 emergency pacing rota.
We have a comprehensive set of tools at our disposal to optimise the treatment of coronary disease including rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithoplasty, FFR, IMR as well as IVUS and OCT for intravascular imaging.
This is a full-time 10 PA position, with additional sessions according to the post holder's skill set. A typical week includes an outpatient clinic, supporting the rapid access chest and cardiac rehab nurses where required, lab sessions, MDTs and ward over.
We are the regional heart attack centre for Kent and Medway and the highest volume non-surgical PPCI centre in the UK. For our local East Kent (760,000) population, we perform 1100 PPCI per year in our WHH catheter labs. There is widespread use of rotablation, lithoplasty, intracoronary imaging (IVUS/OCT) and functional invasive assessment (FFR/IMR). Moreover, we have developed a CTO programme over the past 2 years performing both antegrade and retrograde cases. With regards to the regional service, we perform approximately 650 PPCIs per year on the heart attack pathway. We have a particularly high percentage of shock and OOHCA patients and our adjusted mortality is well below expected for this high-risk cohort as evidenced from the BCIS database.
We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, with three acute hospitals and community sites serving a local population of around 700,000. We also provide specialist services for Kent and Medway. We're on an exciting journey of transformation. With a new Medical School at the centre of our community, a focus on research, clinical leadership and making our trust a rewarding and friendly place to work, there's never been a better time to join us.
