Job description
LAS Specialty Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedics

We are recruiting for a Trust Grade Registrar to join the Trauma & Orthopaedic department on a fixed term basis for 6 months, with a view to extend to 12 months.

Main duties of the job

These are excellent opportunities for someone looking to gain more orthopaedic experience before applying for National ST selection in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

By the end of the year we would expect you to independently perform hip hemiarthroplasty, DHS, gamma nail of femur, ankle fixation, external fixation of tibia, MUA of common paediatric fractures, K wiring of wrists etc.

Depending on the allocation of your firms you will also gain experience of a variety of elective orthopaedic procedures. You will also become confident in the outpatient management of common fractures.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006.

The hospital provides all those services normally associated with a very large District General Hospital. The hospital provides services on a single site for all the major specialities including Accident and Emergency, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Genitourinary Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial surgery, paediatrics (including a NICU), general medicine (including all major medical specialities including CCU, Renal Unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialities.

Job responsibilities

You will be encouraged to deliver at least 1 audit project during the 12 months and you will be given the opportunity to join on-going departmental research projects.

You will be working on a level equivalent to Middle Grade.

You will be an integral part of a team working for a consultant. You will attend your consultants elective lists and elective clinics. You will also be rostered for fracture clinics and regular trauma lists.

You may be expected to travel between hospital sites to attend peripheral clinics at West Berkshire Community Hospital, Newbury, Bracknell Healthspace and / or Townlands Hospital, Henley.

You will form part of the senior tier of on call duties joining a resident on call rota.

Professional Qualifications
  • Full registration with the GMC with a current licence to practice.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Expected to have gained MRCS
Clinical Skills
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need
  • Demonstrates appropriate technical competence & evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills & judgement?validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
  • Attendance at relevant courses, e.g., ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills, CCrISP or equivalent
Research, Teaching and Audit
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management & evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of research basic research principles, methodology & ethics, with potential to contribute to research
  • Evidence of contributing to teaching & learning of others
  • Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements.
  • Evidence of active participation in audit
  • Evidence of participation in risk management and/or clinical/laboratory research
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competences in this specialty by time of appointment
  • At least 12 months' experience in Surgical Specialties (not including Foundation modules) by time of appointment
  • Ability to provide a complete employment history
