Job description

This is a full time post with on calls for a fixed term period of 12 months initially. There will be sessions at both Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospitals however the role is based predominantly at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The post is ward based however there is opportunity every week to attend clinics and theatres.

Duties will include elective and trauma admissions. The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital is mainly the acute site and Burnley General Teaching Hospital is the cold site where most of the elective surgery is performed. You will share the day to day management of pre and post-operative trauma as well as elective patients with appropriate support from senior colleagues.

The on-call duties are on a full shift system which is made up of FY2s, JCFs and CT 1-2s. The Trust operates an out of hour’s on-call service that incorporates all surgical specialties and as such the successful candidate will be expected to participate in this.

All subspecialties within Orthopaedics are represented apart from spinal surgery and you will have exposure to a varied case mix. We are supported by an Orthogeriatric team and Trauma Co-ordinators.

The 2 main hospitals in East Lancashire NHS Hospitals Trust are Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

The department is supported by the following medical staff:

  • 20 Consultants
  • 4 Specialty Doctors
  • 7 ST3+ trainees
  • 5 Senior Clinical Fellows
  • 2 Core Surgical trainees
  • 5 Junior Clinical Fellows
  • 5 FY2 trainees
  • 4 FY1 trainees
  • 6 Advanced Clinical Practitioners

The post is classed as non-training grade but the department is fully committed to provide equivalent level of training to the post holder with a named clinical supervisor and regular appraisals. There is great opportunity to be involved with departmental audit and research projects.

You will gain excellent clinical experience and have the opportunity to further your skills and attend theatres and clinics including fracture clinics.
