The Cardiothoracic service comprises of a 15 bedded Intensive Care Unit, and 34 ward beds, of which 14 are step down. There are two dedicated cardiac theatres for elective and emergency admissions. A full range of outpatient clinics operate from the main outpatient department.
The department of cardiac investigations provides extensive non-invasive facilities for the hospital including exercise treadmill testing, transthoracic and trans-oesophageal echocardiography, ambulatory ECG and Blood Pressure monitoring. Rapid access chest pain, heart failure and pacemaker follow up clinics are held in the dept on the main University Hospital, Coventry site.
There are regular Cardiac Magnetic Resource Imaging Sessions jointly undertaken between the radiology and cardiac department.
There is an active coronary rehabilitation programme, together with a community-based programme for coronary prevention. Supporting the large departmental research programme, there are 2 research fellows and 2 research nurses.
The department of cardiology has expanded rapidly and is one of the busiest centres in the West Midlands region, providing a 24-hour emergency service, 7 days per week. More than 1,000 PPCI procedures are performed per year, at least 50% of which are on patients admitted as an emergency, either directly to University Hospital or following transfer from neighbouring coronary care units. These procedures are performed in the 3 Cardiac Catheter Laboratories on site.
Departmental Staffing Structure
There are total of 8 consultants currently. 5 practice pure adult cardiac surgery 3 pure thoracic surgery. Consultants work closely with cardiology/respiratory colleagues. There are weekly multidisciplinary meetings at which patients are discussed and a monthly clinical governance meeting.
Support Services
Other disciplines provide support where necessary in the collaborative assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients as appropriate. There is an important liaison between, rehabilitation.
