The Opportunity

The selected candidate will become part of the Caterpillar IT team (Energy & Transportation Segment) located in Peterborough. This position involves supporting the Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) by serving as the intermediary between IT and diverse global business units, facilitating the creation of requirements, development, testing and utilisation of information systems across Sales, Marketing, Service, and the Aftermarket team.

The primary emphasis will be on gaining an in-depth understanding of the departments and their role in supporting Caterpillar's strategy aligned with available technology solutions.

The successful applicant will join a global team supporting comprehensive business operations, offering opportunities for professional growth and exposure to various business functions. Additionally, there will be experience gained with numerous application technologies and IT architectures, with a primary focus on Salesforce.

This is an excellent chance for a skilled business analyst with strong tech knowledge to enhance their capabilities by shaping and maintaining an IT portfolio for a major international organisation.

What You Will Do
  • Develop a strong understanding of business data structures within a Snowflake environment and build relationships to comprehend data hierarchies in a mixed application environment.
  • Assist in building and maintaining business rules, data views, and data catalogues to ensure accurate and accessible information.
  • Collaborate with senior analysts and stakeholders to document data definitions and lineage for transparency and compliance.
  • Support efforts to organise and optimise data for advanced analytics and AI‑driven solutions.
  • Learn and contribute to processes that expose curated data to AI models, enabling the creation of robust vector databases.
  • Participate in initiatives to integrate data into agentic frameworks, driving intelligent automation and decision‑making.
  • Continuously expand technical skills in SQL, data modelling, and cloud‑based data platforms.
What You Will Have

Core Application Systems: Knowledge of major production application systems used for delivery of services to internal and external clients; ability to leverage major production application systems in diverse situations.

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognising, anticipating, and resolving organisational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

  • Attention to detail – Critical for building accurate data views and rules.
  • Problem‑solving mindset – Ability to troubleshoot data issues.

Application Design, Architecture: Knowledge of basic activities and deliverables of application design; ability to utilise application design methodologies, tools and techniques to convert business requirements and logical models into a technical application design.

  • SQL proficiency – Ability to write queries, create views, and manipulate data in Snowflake.

Implementation: Knowledge of how to run applications for organisations; ability to implement application software within an organisation and help end‑users perform specific tasks (ex: accounting or graphic design).

Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyse and record required business functionality and non‑functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.

System and Technology Integration: Knowledge of the features and facilities of systems; ability to integrate and communicate among applications, databases and technology platforms.

System Testing: Knowledge of system and software testing; ability to design, plan and execute system testing strategies and tactics to ensure the quality of software at all stages of the system life cycle.

Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles
Core Technical Skills
  • Data modelling basics – Understanding of tables, relationships, and normalisation.
  • Cloud data platform familiarity – Exposure to Snowflake concepts like warehouses, schemas, and roles.
  • Basic scripting – Knowledge of Python for data processing and automation.
  • Version control – Familiarity with Git for collaborative work.
  • Basic understanding of APIs – For exposing data to external systems or AI models.
  • Understanding of data quality principles – Accuracy, completeness, consistency.
Soft Skills
  • Communication skills – Documenting and explaining data structures to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Continuous learning attitude – Open to upskilling in AI, data engineering, and cloud technologies.

  • This role is based from the office in Peterborough 5 days a week.
