Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Location: Robertsbridge, East Sussex
Type: Full-Time | Term-Time Only | Long-Term Role with Potential to Become Permanent

Are you passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of children with special educational needs? We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary setting supporting children aged 5 to 11 with complex needs.

About the Pupils:

Our pupils all have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and primarily present with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or autism-related traits. Many also experience additional challenges, including:

  • Speech, language and communication difficulties
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Sensory processing issues
  • Anxiety, demand avoidance, and emotional-based school avoidance
  • Learning difficulties including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)

Role Overview:

As an HLTA, you will support the teaching team by delivering tailored learning activities, leading small group or whole-class lessons when required, and providing specialist support to children with a range of needs. Your work will be integral to promoting an inclusive, nurturing, and structured learning environment.

You will collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff to ensure each child's educational, emotional, and social development is supported effectively.

Key Responsibilities as a HLTA:

  • Deliver engaging lessons and interventions in line with individual education plans
  • Support pupils' communication, social skills, and emotional regulation
  • Implement behaviour management strategies with empathy and consistency
  • Work 1:1 or with small groups to support learning and development
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, adapting support as needed
  • Contribute to planning and school development activities
  • Maintain a safe and supportive classroom environment

Ideal Candidate:

  • HLTA qualified or with equivalent experience in a specialist educational setting
  • Experience working with primary-aged children with Autism and associated needs
  • Strong understanding of SEMH, sensory processing, and communication difficulties
  • Confident in delivering lessons and managing challenging behaviours
  • Compassionate, patient, and skilled in building positive relationships
