General Practitioner – Urgent Treatment Centre, Colchester Hospital

Location: Colchester Hospital

Service: Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC)

Shift Availability: 07:00–00:00, 7 days a week (including weekends and Bank Holidays)

Join Our Team

We’re looking for qualified, experienced, and motivated General Practitioners to join our multidisciplinary team at the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), co-located with the Emergency Department at Colchester Hospital. Ideal candidate will have experience working in both Primary and Secondary care, ideally within the Emergency Department or with a specialist interest in Urgent and Emergency Care, and experience in the management of both illness and injury in adults and children.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment alongside Paramedics, Nurse Practitioners, ACPs, Nurses, and HCAs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide same-day care for minor injuries and illnesses in both adults and children (from birth).
  • Work closely with Emergency Department colleagues to enhance clinical skills and patient care.
  • Deliver safe, timely, and effective treatment independently.
  • Refer patients to specialties for ongoing care and specialist opinion when necessary.
  • Support and lead the multidisciplinary team in clinical decision-making.
  • Provide triage where required.
  • Record full clinical notes using the UTC IT systems and complete coding requirements in line with Trust requirements.
  • Complete all admin work related to consultations.
  • Work as part of the wider clinical team, supporting Nurse Practitioners, HCAs, GP colleagues, and training Doctors.
  • Manage referrals of UTC patients to acute specialties, A&E, or community services where required.
  • Support the redirection of patients to their registered GP where appropriate.
  • Educate patients on appropriate use of NHS services.
  • Prescribe medicines in accordance with the UTC formulary and dispense medicines from stock where available.
  • Complete discharge letters for all patients seen in the UTC.
