Financial Controller

Location: Sheffield Salary: £60,000 – £70,000 (Dependent on Experience) Reporting to: Finance Director

The Role

An established Sheffield-based SME is seeking to appoint a Financial Controller to a newly created position within the finance leadership team. Reporting directly into the Finance Director, this role has been created to support the next phase of the business’s growth and will play a pivotal part in strengthening financial controls, reporting, and commercial insight across the organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on Financial Controller who enjoys operating in a broad role within a growing SME environment, with genuine scope to influence processes and support strategic decision‑making.

Key Responsibilities

• Ownership of monthly management accounts, including commentary and variance analysis
• Overseeing day‑to‑day financial operations, including ledgers, bank reconciliations and balance sheet integrity
• Developing and maintaining robust financial controls, processes and procedures
• Supporting budgeting, forecasting and cashflow management
• Partnering with the Finance Director and wider leadership team to provide commercial insight
• Managing and developing a small finance team
• Liaising with external accountants, auditors and advisors as required
• Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across finance systems and reporting

About You

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA or equivalent)
• Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role within an SME environment
• Strong technical accounting and financial reporting skills
• Hands‑on, proactive and detail‑oriented, with the ability to operate strategically
• Confident stakeholder manager, comfortable working closely with senior leaders
• Experience improving processes and controls in a growing business is highly desirable
