Previous experience is essential, along with a good understanding of Customs legal requirements and the impact of incorrect information or declarations. Extensive customs knowledge would be an advantage.

You will need strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to compile documentation and interpret legal requirements clearly and simply, while liaising with various agencies daily.

Responsibilities of the Customs Clerk:

  • Work as part of a team, completing export and import entries on the in-house system.
  • Assist clients with the classification of goods and their importance.
  • Enter details onto specialised freight and Customs software, including CNS, Destin8, Multifreight/Multished.
  • Prepare and process necessary import/export documentation and declarations, including T-documents.
  • Liaise with Port Health or Customs officials regarding document checks, quarantine, etc.
  • Handle general enquiries from importers/exporters concerning Customs procedures, tariff classifications, duty rates, and documentation.
  • Stay updated with changes in regulations, laws, and customs procedures.

Requirements for the Customs Clerk role:

  • Confidence navigating HMRC's online tariffs and a solid understanding of customs commodity codes, procedures, and CDS requirements.
  • Knowledge of Free Trade Agreements, including Origin and Preference.
  • Experience with a wide range of entry declarations, including home use, returned goods, temporary import/export, and multiple items.
  • Ability to organise work effectively and maintain records.
  • Excellent numerical skills for calculating VAT and Duty.

We are keen to speak with customs professionals experienced in processing import and export entries using CDS, particularly for European road freight and deep-sea ocean freight clearances.
