We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well‑integrated team. The Vacancy has arisen within the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Northern Vascular Centre, based at the Freeman Hospital. The post is available for 12 months initially and will become a 1‑in‑8 vascular on‑call rota. The post would suit experienced registrars who wish to train further in both general & complex sub‑specialist Vascular practice, which can be tailored to the individual prior to appointment as a consultant. Salary will be at an appropriate point on the ST3+ pay scale depending on experience.

  • Oversee day‑to‑day management of patients on the vascular ward including supervising more junior members of the vascular team.
  • Attend vascular out‑patient clinics and operating lists.
  • Participate in weekly multidisciplinary team and monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.
  • On‑call duties are a 1‑in‑8 non‑resident rota, including management of emergency vascular admissions to the Freeman Hospital and providing cover for the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Major Trauma Centre). There is no commitment to General Surgery.
Administrative Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for assisting the junior residents in the timely completion of discharge summaries and other general administrative work on behalf of the consultants.

Research
  • The unit has an active research portfolio. Opportunities for clinical and experimental surgical research for the post holder are available, both within the Department of Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology.
  • Weekly unit and monthly directorate educational and audit meetings are held, which the post holder is expected to attend.
Teaching

The unit regularly hosts medical students for both basic clinical and final year teaching. Most teaching is supervised by Teaching Fellows, but the post holder is expected to teach medical students, post‑graduate students and nurses from time to time.
