Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well‑established and supportive team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals as a Clinical Fellow in Neurology.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic and dedicated team comprising four Consultants, two Registrars, and four Specialist Nurses (covering Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease), working alongside the inpatient Neurology service based Ward at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke's Hospital.

The team benefits from strong internal support from colleagues in Radiology, Neurophysiology, Neuropsychology, and Neuro‑therapy, as well as extensive external clinical networks.

This role will primarily focus on General Neurology, including supporting the streamlining of pathways for neurology input across primary and secondary care. The post holder will also be encouraged to develop individual specialist interests and services.

Please note this is a 6 months contract.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of the Neurology team, contributing to high‑quality inpatient and outpatient care across Bradford Teaching Hospitals. The role involves supporting acute and ongoing management of patients with neurological conditions, participating in MDT working, and delivering safe and effective clinical practice.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate clinical excellence, strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • The postholder will provide inpatient care for patients on the Neurology wards (St Lukes and Bradford Royal Infirmary), manage the day‑to‑day care of inpatients, including clerking new admissions, daily ward rounds, and making clinical decisions for patients with acute neurological issues alongside the Neurology Registrar and Consultant team.
  • The postholder will assist with the Lumbar Puncture (LP) waiting list and perform LPs where indicated, under appropriate supervision.
  • The postholder will participate in the acute neurology referral service, including the assessment and management of emergency neurology admissions and referrals from other specialities.
  • The postholder will undertake regular General Neurology outpatient clinics, including both new and follow‑up appointments.
  • The postholder will support the development and delivery of streamlined pathways for neurology input across both primary and secondary care settings.
  • The postholder will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case discussions and joint clinics as appropriate.
  • The postholder will liaise closely with colleagues in Radiology, Neurophysiology, Neuropsychology and Neuro‑therapy to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • The postholder will contribute to the ongoing development of specialist neurology services, with opportunities to develop individual subspecialty interests (e.g. movement disorders, MS, headache, epilepsy).
  • The postholder will participate in departmental educational meetings and clinical governance activities, audit, research and service improvement.
  • The postholder will participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation projects within the Neurology department. Contribute to research and innovation activities where appropriate.
  • The postholder will support the department's objectives in achieving Neurology RTT recovery targets and service efficiency improvements.

On‑Call Commitment: Participation in the Neurology on‑call rota may be required, depending on service needs. Details will be confirmed at the interview.

Qualifications (Essential)
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2‑year experience at IMT level (or equivalent)
Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Speciality Certificate Exams in Neurology
Experience (Essential)
  • Previous experience relevant to the specialty
  • Experience in the specialty beyond ST3 or equivalent
  • Evidence of having completed Internal Medicine Training (IMT) or equivalent and experience managing neurology patients.
  • Experience in Neurology and managing patients with neurological conditions
Skills (Essential)
  • Ability to perform the requirements of the post
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Commitment to working cooperatively and collaboratively with other health professionals and organisations
  • Ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
  • Competent in neurological assessment, investigation and initial management

  • All applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, demonstrated by undergraduate training in English or IELTS scores of Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7 within 24 months of application. If applicants have adequate communication skills but do not fit these examples, they must provide supporting evidence.
