Primary Function

Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. Knowledge of instruments and interaction with surgeons, nurses, and OR team is vital to ensure proper products are available at the time of surgery.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room, Sterile Processing area, and durable patient care equipment.
  • Operate and be responsible for sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, and endoscope reprocessors; perform high-level disinfection and maintain accurate records.
  • Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual washing techniques and automated systems; conduct visual and operational inspections.
  • Understand cleaning protocols and appropriate use of cleaning agents/detergents.
  • Visually inspect instruments for cleanliness, function, and wear before assembly.
  • Assemble instrument trays and equipment according to sheets; wrap or pouch items appropriately.
  • Perform challenge tests on sterilizers and interpret parameters to ensure proper functioning.
  • Check the OR schedule daily to determine surgical case needs and priorities.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain for organizing supplies; check for additional surgeries.
  • Comply with federal, state, AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment; escalate issues as needed.
  • Maintain and distribute sterile supplies and carts throughout the hospital.
  • Practice Universal Precautions.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and provide support as needed.
Job Qualifications
  • 6 months of Surgical Services experience preferred.
  • HSPA CRCST certification required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Skills in inventory management, problem solving, communication, teamwork, and multitasking.
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office.
