Job description
Overview

The Histopathology Department has a vacancy for a Higher Biomedical Support Worker (Band 3) to join our busy, but friendly team. The department handles 44,000 surgical and diagnostic requests annually across two sites (Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital). The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a growing population across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. The department has full UKAS accreditation, HTA and MHRA compliance, and the main Cellular Pathology Laboratory is based at Bedford Hospital with some shifts at Luton & Dunstable site. You will be joining a friendly, high performing Trust committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of staff.

Responsibilities
  • To assist BMS and senior laboratory BMS in the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service, through the Quality Management System.
  • To assist in following the quality policy and the department's quality objectives.
  • To follow UKAS standards and the Pathology Quality Management System, fulfilling the quality circles and audits within ISO 15189 compliance.
  • To follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the department using the Document Management Module of the Q-Pulse system.
  • To comply with Policies and Procedures relevant to the role and to conduct day-to-day operations for the department and within the team.
  • To ensure test requests are processed within agreed turnaround times and departmental policies.
  • To contribute to departmental audits (vertical, horizontal or examination audits relevant to the service).
  • To follow the Risk Management Policy, including reporting incidents, accidents and adverse events, and ensuring Risk Assessments are followed.
  • To contribute to department communication, disseminating and receiving information from management, operations and Health & Safety meetings as needed.
  • Where required, to participate in all aspects of the department with the ability to perform a limited range of tests and assays methodically, within training limits.
  • To assist in training of support staff where required.
Additional Information

Travel between hospital sites may be required. Vacancies may close prior to the advertised closing date when a sufficient number of applications have been received. All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering the first 6 months in post.
