Job Summary

Scott Arms Medical Centre is looking for an enthusiastic, well‑motivated, flexible caretaker to work 20 hours per week. Core hours are Monday‑Friday 07:00‑09:00 and 18:00‑20:00. The post holder must also be available 7 days a week to respond to alarms outside those hours. The caretaker will work closely with the facilities Practice Manager, maintaining the GP surgery to a high standard and supporting the team as required.

Responsibilities
  • Open and close the premises daily
  • Be first call to attend alarms outside surgery hours
  • Carry out general maintenance, including small repairs, basic plumbing, and maintenance of toilets when blocked
  • Repair and maintain front sliding doors, perform small paint jobs and other routine maintenance tasks
  • Dispose of clinical and other waste, and place sharps bins out for collection
  • Move furniture and equipment as required
  • Call in skilled maintenance staff for larger repairs
  • Assist with the set‑up of rooms and ensure health and safety compliance at all times
  • Report issues appropriately and diagnose faults
  • Repair equipment and install new equipment as needed
  • Perform routine, planned maintenance and test fire/alarm systems weekly
  • Store, protect, and change alarms and internal door codes regularly
  • Take deliveries, manage stock, and keep stock levels adequate
  • Manage the car park, keeping it free of debris
  • Assist with weekly testing of fire alarms and emergency lighting
  • Ensure light shades are clean and replace bulbs when necessary
  • Help with IT issues and assist with rota management in the IT system
Essential Qualities
  • Strong physical fitness for moving, lifting and bending
  • Good manual and practical skills, including basic DIY
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Calm under pressure and problem‑solving skills
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Willingness to work alone or in team environments, including heights or confined spaces when required
  • Health and safety aware and methodical, reliable, and capable of following instructions
Desirable Qualities
  • Interest in how things work and a proactive approach to maintenance
  • Previous experience or knowledge of facility maintenance in a healthcare setting
