Overview

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is a CPA and IBMS accredited department serving a major university teaching hospital with many clinical specialties. The laboratories utilise state-of-the-art equipment. We provide a comprehensive range of haematology and blood transfusion laboratory services and specialty diagnostic testing and reference work for leukaemia, haemostasis, thrombosis and haemoglobinopathies.

Position

Blood Transfusion Telephone Coordinator

You will be required to work at all Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites, dependent on the needs of the service. However this post is expected to be based initially at the Oxford Road Site. The department is looking for an individual to work five afternoons/evenings per week, Monday to Friday, alternating between 13:45 to 18:45 in week one and 16:00 to 21:00 in week two to provide telecommunications support for the blood transfusion department. You may be required to work contracted hours as necessary to meet service needs. Shift patterns will be determined by your line manager.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as a Telephone Coordinator / Medical Laboratory Assistant who will support BMSs with a high level of expertise and knowledge, providing scientific services to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. The post holder will handle telephone enquiries to the Blood Transfusion department regarding sample and product availability. Ensure all telephone enquiries and orders are handled promptly and professionally, and that details and actions are passed to BMS staff and appropriately recorded. Track Blood & Blood Components throughout the Trust to ensure appropriate storage and records are kept. Clean and disinfect equipment and laboratory areas and dispose of tissue and patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelines. This role requires development of expertise in handling transfusion calls, good organisation, and strong interpersonal skills. The job can be pressurised and the post-holder should be able to perform under pressure.
